hsc=NC_ERROR / unable to start VM's

Hi All,
Just a quick one for those that might have a error starting VM's. If phpvbox fails to login (vboxwebsvr not running) then you might have a double vbox user ,
to check this ssh into you Nas box and run

Code: Select all

/usr/local/bin/sudo -u vboxusers /usr/local/bin/vboxmanage list vms
and your get the error
ERROR [COM]: hrc=NS_ERROR_FAILURE
it's possible the gui has added two vboxusers, this cant be seen from /etc/passwd but you can check /etc/group , if you have two vbox users listed then its possible the gui messed up, the quick fix is this.

1. Download your config file from the gui
2. open config.xml in notepad+++
3. search for vboxusers using search document (ctrl+f) function , note the postions , you should have one vbox as a user and one as a group, delete the second vboxuser

example below

Code: Select all

			<user>
				<uuid>715997e1-b2eb-493d-86cf-c7d217998a67</uuid>
				<name>vboxusers</name>
				<id>920</id>
				<primarygroup>920</primarygroup>
				<extraoptions>-c &quot;Virtualbox user&quot; -d &quot;/mnt/igeek/virtual_box&quot; -s /usr/sbin/nologin</extraoptions>
			</user>
			<user>
				<uuid>8937d051-f1b4-4048-8207-c73e81d5d364</uuid>
				<name>syncthing</name>
				<id>983</id>
				<primarygroup>983</primarygroup>
				<extraoptions>-c &quot;Syncthing Daemon&quot; -d /var/tmp/syncthing -s /usr/sbin/nologin</extraoptions>
			</user>
***			<user>
				<uuid>235a1033-f7ee-443a-8c55-6bea64d5139e</uuid>
				<name>vboxusers</name>
				<id>920</id>
				<primarygroup>920</primarygroup>
				<extraoptions>-c &quot;Virtualbox user&quot; -d &quot;/mnt/igeek/virtual_box&quot; -s /usr/sbin/nologin</extraoptions>
			</user>***
so in the above example you would remove from the <user> to </user> for the second mentioned vboxusers in your search.
and then same for the group ,

Code: Select all

			<group>
				<uuid>ab0ee675-e8d1-4052-b7c2-e6b46c918eb8</uuid>
				<id>933</id>
				<name>dlna</name>
			</group>
			<group>
				<uuid>235a1033-f7ee-443a-8c55-6bea64d5139e</uuid>
				<id>920</id>
				<name>vboxusers</name>
			</group>
***			<group>
				<uuid>8c6658dd-6475-4e3c-8844-2d9fef671dff</uuid>
				<name>vboxusers</name>
				<id>920</id>
			</group>***
i've added the *** for marking purpose only as i cant hightlight text in code box, text between those stars should be deleted , note your UUID will be different but ID will not be,

4. save file as "new filename.xml"
5. upload new config and wait for reboot

Well i hope this helps anyone having vbox issues in this manner. moral of my story is "There can be only one"
