I suffered a catastrophic failure of my old 1.5Tb UFS disk that formed the main storage area of my NAS for years, and althogh the data wasnt massively important it did cause me some problems, so i have rebuilt using new Disks in a ZFS pool, with a 2Tb UFS disk for temporary download locations and other things so i don't have to spin up the zpool disks all the time.

At the same time i rebuilt from 11.2 to 12.0 BETA.

I have managed to get everything working in normal timescales for me (my Linux knowledge is based mostly around Checkpoint Firewalls and Google-Fu) however when i started to setup Virtualbox i got the classic couldn't login to the web portal as described in many posts, one of which i linked here....
viewtopic.php?f=102&t=14043&sid=65a1015 ... e3f2d41483

So i resolved this and then started to build my VM which is just a winxp black machine i spin up when i need to do something remotely on the local LAN. The vdi file was the same one from the previous version. When i started the VM i got the following error.....

I have then tried to google the crap out of this error trying different things and have now most likely messed up my Virtualbox install by generally changing the owner and permissions of different files and directories.... i think i now need to remove and re-install or at least verify permissions on the files and directories......and get advice from someone who understands this far better than i do.

My output for my Home directory as defined in the WebUI is shown below...

Clearly as you can probably tell my knowledge in this area is not the best and appreciate i have probably done more harm than good by changing things i don't fully understand, but could really use some advice and baby steps on how to resolve this.

Many Thanks

Update and Fix..... I continued to Google and try to work out whats happening......

I found an article that details how to start VM from CLI......

Code: Select all

xigmanas: ~# sudo -H -b -u vboxusers /usr/local/lib/virtualbox/VBoxHeadless --startvm Test
xigmanas: ~# VBoxHeadless: supR3HardenedVerifyFileInternal: Cannot trust the file "/usr/local/lib/virtualbox/VMMR0.r0": group and/or other writable (st_mode=0100777)
xigmanas: ~# sudo chmod 755 /usr/local/lib/virtualbox/VMMR0.r0

xigmanas: ~# sudo -H -b -u vboxusers /usr/local/lib/virtualbox/VBoxHeadless --startvm Test
xigmanas: ~# Oracle VM VirtualBox Headless Interface 5.2.26
(C) 2008-2019 Oracle Corporation
All rights reserved.

Error: failed to start machine. Error message: Failed to load R0 module /usr/local/lib/virtualbox/VMMR0.r0: World writable: '/usr/local' (VERR_SUPLIB_WORLD_WRITABLE).
Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_WORLD_WRITABLE)
So now I have a different error when starting the VM and also now I actually have a VM Log file against the machine which didn't exist before so now i have .......

Code: Select all

I saw that ive modified the /usr/local permissions incorrectly due to this "unusable because of 'World writable: '/usr/local' so ive switched them to 755

sudo chmod 755 /usr/local

now my VM starts correctly.

Moral of the story, stop changing permissions on files to 777, it doesn't help :)

I hope this post finds someone someday as stupid as I was and gives them a nudge in the right direction.

Luke
