Supermicro X10 and X11 motherboards? good choice?

For building your ultimate n4f server, i do think Supermicro offers wonderful hardware you should take under consideration when you start building something new. Let's have a look:

https://www.supermicro.nl/products/moth ... 3000/#1150 X10 series on socket 1150
https://www.supermicro.nl/products/moth ... 3000/#1151 X11 series on socket 1151

After some time using my very own X10SL7-F with E3-1241v3 I can recommend such to you all.
What more can I say? dedicated IPMI/BMC, ECC Ram, Dual Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports and also in microATX form factor what I do like for smaller builds.

IPMI makes it happen that you can easy manage/control/install the OS to your server without the need of
an extra keyboard + mouse, monitor. No more the need to have the server very close to you in case of some maintenance.

Another happy user,
Thank you, Supermicro!

I personally hate Supermicro motherboards.. Have never used one and never will.. :P :P

.
Just kidding, of course, but you could easily figure this out from my signature anyways...
What my signature does not mention, though, is that I also have an even older gen supermicro motherboard (x8sil-f) for my 24/7 always on home server
It is paired with a Xeon L3426 and 16GB of ECC Udimms.
Super stable/reliable workhorse which turns off only twice/year for hardware maintenance reasons (cleaning)

On my todo plan is an 1151 socket supermicro (with the new 64GB ram limits) to use as a hypervisor and get rid of my always on server, my backup NAS and my windows PC. Also thinking to add an Active Diectory server
Would also be nice to get rid of my security appliance, too, but my home office is located in my personal bedroom which has no phone plug  (the kids bedroom has a phone plug, the living room where my appliance is located has a phone plug, hell there is even a phone plug in the kitchen, but not on the main bedroom - wtf has that constructor thinking???)
So either I would have to lay some long telephone cord to my bedroom, or I will have to get myself a nice managed switch and use vlans. (which one is the easiest??  :P )
We will see if/when I get the 1151 board

The documentation from Supermicro could be a bit better i think, but their hardware works really good. Soon the java ikvm app gets replaced by their html5 version.

Love the SuperMicro boards. Only tiny issue I've found is that the on board graphics doesn't play nice with some USB KVM switches.

I really wanted to go for the X10 but was keeping price down and wated to use the CPU from my HP Gen 8 microserver so was stucke with 1151.

Even X9 with Socket 1155 are worth looking at and they are quite cheap now on ebay

hi all

i use motherboard for a nas4free cluster build around x8dth-i dual xeon 55xx series
cluster setup for samba share for my local lan, and iscsi share for multi cluster build for virtualization (xen-server, hyper-v, proxmox, esxi)
they works fine since a few time .

So to ask your question, yes you could build it with another mother classe of supermicro motherboard.

Hi octave.
Was this a reply to my post above?

no html5 ikvm for my x10 board yet. R 3.27 seems to still be java.

No worries, html5 version currently released are still not the final versions.
All X10 boards and up will get it, most likely the released some current firmware's to fix some other bugs?
But it will be great when we get rid of java in the end.

since there was no official release for my board i contacted supermicro.
It turns out you can use any of the redfish x10 versions on any X10SL* boards as they are board independant, it just might not be verified by supermicro.

so i finally have html5 kvm as well.

Would you care to elaborate? :)
My home hypervisor uses a x10slm-f
Which firmware did you use for your x10sll?

Edit: OK just saw that redfish 3.27 is available for my board. I thought I had that and KVM was still asking for java. (Supermicro IPMIView was writing ASPD_T v3.27 on top)
But I now logged in to the BMC via the browser and it writes Redfish v1.0
I guess I will need a firmware upgrade ...
@b0ssman: Or am I misunderstanding the whole thing? (because I just checked and for your x10sll-f I see the same v3.27 available)

Edit2: Nevermind, I just realized you mentioned earlier that 3.27 is still java and after googling a bit I saw a 3.31 version which is supposed to be html5.
Is this the one you installed?

you can use any of the redfish_X10_XXX versions. they are not board specific. its just not officially validated.
just go to this site and use the one with the highest number.

http://supermicro.com/support/bios/firmware0.aspx

when updating to a html5 firmware you have to reset all settings to default.

I see..
Which one did you install?
Our boards are almost identical, so installing the same as yours which you know has no issues, seems like the correct way to start.
Thanks!
