[SOLVED] XigmaNAS 11.2.0.4 - No Time Machine

#1

Post by cookiemonster » 03 Oct 2018 22:33

Hello. I'm after some pointers to get Time Machine backups support on this version.
I've upgraded from the 10 series. Most things working and the upgrade went pretty smoothly as a fresh embedded installation.
CIFS is running with mostly defaults. Local user authentication.
AFP and Bonjour are enabled, local authentication. The share is setup as the before, Time Machine ticked. Apart from name, all defaults.
The share appears on my macOS client. Offers to use the share as time machine destination. After selecting the share as a disk to use I get the authentication dialogue, enter my XigmaNAS username and password and get the error: There was a problem connecting to the server "servername"The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem.

After looking at the samba configuration web documentation, I couldn't see what might help.
From apple's help https://developer.apple.com/library/arc ... index.html it seems to me the support is in code not in config, in other words there is nothing I can add to the additional parameters in XigmaNAS AFP page.
Web search results only seem to offer advice a bit old for my macOS version 10.12.6.
Any help or pointers to troubleshoot will be greatly appreciated.

What is the rev. do you use in config?, NT1 is not supported, actually SMB3 is the correct version to use.

Please post a screen capture of your SMB config.

I did try from default to SMB3 and now is back to default. I will check and try again tonight @raulfg3. Thanks.

Hi I've tried all the possible permutations of available SMB3 versions of both minimum and maximum server protocol. Save and restart after every change and then attempt to connect from client. Same error message. Is this what you requested to see?:

Can you not share the disk using AFP (instead of SMB)?

More Apple-friendly. Works for me with Time Machine.

And (I believe, when I last measured it) rather faster.

Hi, to be honest maybe I misunderstood when it has been said that timemachine these days require to be used over SMB, I assumed it meant the server had to have both services installed and running. That's what I did on my previous version of NAS4FREE and all worked fine.
Following that assumption upon upgrade to 11.2.0.4 I also have both SAMBA/CIFS and AFP both running. However I don't have the same mount point served by both protocols. There are no AFP logs either. Anybody knows how to enable AFP logging?
@mooble, did you mean something else?

Some more testing done. When changed smb "Server Max. Protocol" and/or "Server Min. Protocol" to SMB3, the client can't connect using smb://servername to get to it. Setting the value back to Default resolves. So SMB is working fine in this way.
AFP still not usable for Timemachine backups. Same error.
By the way the macOS version is 10.12.6

Odd.

Code: Select all

 afpd --v
afpd: illegal option -- -
afpd 3.1.11 - Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) daemon of Netatalk

the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software
Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later
version. Please see the file COPYING for further information and details.

afpd has been compiled with support for these features:

          AFP versions:	2.2 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.3 3.4
         CNID backends:	dbd last tdb

              afp.conf:	/usr/local/etc/afp.conf
           extmap.conf:	/usr/local/etc/extmap.conf
       state directory:	/var/db/netatalk/
    afp_signature.conf:	/var/db/netatalk/afp_signature.conf

       UAM search path:	/etc/uams//
  Server messages path:	/var/db/netatalk/msg/
I can see the listed server and share:
>cat /var/db/netatalk/afp_signature.conf

Code: Select all

# DON'T TOUCH NOR COPY THOUGHTLESSLY!
# This file is auto-generated by afpd.
#
# ServerSignature is unique identifier used to prevent logging on to
# the same server twice.
#
# If setting "signature = xxxxx" in afp.conf, this file is not used.

# This file is auto-generated by afpd
# and stores UUIDs for Time Machine volumes.

"apple_share"	3CB8B2D6-E24D-35A8-478F-D655B9BD1451
But > ls /usr/local/etc/

Code: Select all

devd mc nut smartd_warning.sh
extmap.conf msmtprc pam.d smb4.conf
fonts newsyslog.conf.d	php ssh
ldap.conf nss_ldap.conf php.ini ssl
ldap.secret nss_ldap.secret rc.d sudoers
>
So I can't tell where afpd is reading its config from. Maybe nothing I can do with it, just trying to figure out what the problem is. I was hoping I could change the config to give logging.

I think I've found the right settings now. These are working for me, in case anybody else needs the functionality.
Guess Authentication = Not enabled.
Clear Text Authentication = PAM authentication is selected.
DHX Authentication = PAM authentication is selected.
DHX2 Authentication = PAM authentication is selected.
