AFP Performance

Post by jimstat » 21 Jan 2015 14:17

Hi

I suspect you'll want more detail. But I'll ask the question;

I get 50-80mb up/download on smb. I get 50-100mb download afp. I only get 2-5mb afp upload. Any ideas please?

9.3.0.2.1310

Thanks

Hi all,

I have more info and I done a few tests last night.

Server: Quad Core, 4GB, 4x1TB Toshiba SSHD Advanced Format, Nas4free 9.3.0.2.1310.
Client: Mac Mini, 8GB, SSD, 2 Core, Mac OS X Mavericks.

Disks 1-3: ZFS.
Disk 4: ZFS, 4k format.

Datasets: Atime off, lzjb, Sync disabled, Dedup off.

Disks report: ashift=12

SMB/CIFS performance: 90-120MB/Sec (900Mbit/sec) Upload/Download

AFP performance: 50-109MB/Sec (900mbit/sec) Download
AFP performance: 1kb-5MB/Sec (40mbit/sec) Upload

The problem is the upload performance of AFP. Makes time machine very, very, sloooooowww...

I then looked at disk performance on the Mac. It's an SSD.

SMB/CIF transfer: 90MB/Sec Read/write performance

AFP performance: 50MB/sec write
AFP performance: 1-5MB/Sec read

So, it looks like the issue is with the Mac and AFP! When I monitored the AFP / Disk performance, it read at about 1.5mb/sec and write at 3mb/sec - always double!

Any light someone can shed on this is appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure if you're still there, but what are you using to test? I can do the same and let you know my results. I have similar hardware (mac mini with ssd) though I virtualize my nas4free, but that shouldn't matter as I pass-through the important stuff.

Using menumeters, I get 20-60MB/s write to my 10 disc RAIDz2, and up to full line rate read speeds.
