Problem with saving

#1

Post by lovro » 23 Apr 2019 14:18

Hello, I run xigmanas through virtualbox, but when I make changes on the WebGUI and have to reboot it everything gets set to default again. Can someone help me please? I'm doing my final work for school and need to fix this as soon as possible, thank you! :)

We'll need more details. Full or embedded for starters. Version installed and your setup please.
Main: Xigmanas 11.2.0.4 x64-full-RootOnZFS on Supermicro X8DT3. zroot on mirrorred pair of CRUCIAL_CT64M225. Memory: 24GB ECC; 2 Xeon E5645 CPUs; Storage: (HBA) - LSI SAS 9211-4i with 3 SATA x 1 Tb in raidZ1, 1 x 3 Tb SAS drive as single stripe.
Spare1: HP DL580 G5; 128 GB ECC RAM; 4 CPU; 8 x 500 GB disks on H210i
Spare2: HP DL360 G7; 6 GB ECC RAM; 1 Xeon CPU; 5 x 500 GB disks on H210i
Spare3: HP DL380 G7; 24 GB ECC RAM; 2 Xeon E5645 CPUs; 8 x 500 GB disks on IBM M1015 flashed to LSI9211-IT

Embedded. XigmaNAS-x64-LiveCD-11.2.0.4.6315.iso. I don't know if I need to use USB for the install or not cause I just downloaded the .iso and installed it basically.

Are you installing using the liveCD as embedded to a usb stick? Otherwise it could explain the experience. Curious how you're doing this in Virtualbox.

https://www.locslikes.com/nas4free/
Did it using this guide, everything like on the site just without using an USB at all.

Many links in there. I checked the one to install: "How to Install Nas4Free". It naturally mentions the USB stick to save to. You said you haven't so I'm puzzled where you installed it and therefore saved the config.
Talk us step by step through your installation process to spot what might be the problem.
Remember if you are running from a LiveCD, changes won't persist reboots of your VM. You can verify by detaching your CD image from your VM. If after restart there is no boot media error, you know you're booting to LiveCD everytime.

So if you're happy to go from test to installing it, you just boot from it and press 9 to go into the installation menu. Then you need to have storage to install it to.
If on Virtualbox you have two easy-ish options I can think of:
1. Plug a usb stick and allow passthrough of it so it is available to your VM upon reboots. Install and chose embedded to install to the usb stick.
2. Chose a Virtualbox virtual hard drive and install as full (not embedded).

P.s. for testing is still good but this setup would not be good for a permanent solution. For that you'd be better served with a bare-metal install or esx-i type IMHO.

if, on the screen of the virtual install, you have an option 9 "install", you are booting to a live iteration, not an installed os.
by using this free advise, you, your heirs, etc
absolve, save, and hold harmless the advisor.
