Recovery

#1

Post by peterpm »

I have just setup Nas4free with Serviio & jails and all works like charm :-) Thanks for the great software.

However I am preparing disaster recovery plan :-)

My setup:

HP: n40l

1 x 250 GB HDD(HP)
3 x 3 TB RED WD.

I installed Nas4free on the 250 GB and used the the 3 WD HD for data with ZFS in Raidz.

I also installed jail with FreeBSD 9.1 on data partition - it contains serviio.

I have two questions:-)

1. What should I do in case of my system drive fails(it is not in raid) ? What should be the proper restore procedure ?
2. Is there a way to setup automatic alert in case one of the drive from data array fails ?

Thanks,

Peter

assuming soft raid or soft raidZ

hardware raid is dangerous to recovery as it may require the EXACT same hardware
down to the chip level
where as; soft raid only requires the same software!

be sure to maintain copies of the OS and Config

then for major MOBO failure

replace with similar mobo

possible resetting of LAN and IP
or not if one moved the lan card too

I moved from a failing 1.2 Ghz celleron with 2 on board SATA and PCI PATA expansion card
Live CD OS; config stored on a 8Mb camera flash card via USB adapter, on board LAN:
to an older P4, adding a PCI SATA expansion card, and moving the PCI PATA expansion card
OS and config on a 1 Gb PATA Flash drive and expansion card LAN

I had to

load the OS [this was FreeNAS-7 embedded]
set the lan and IP
restore the config
reset the lan and IP

and it all worked
it is possible I was very lucky

there is e-mail notification

1-You only need to do a new fresh install on a new boot disk , and restore your config. (I understand that your Jail is in your raidz1 data disk) if correct, You do not need any more.
12.0.0.4 (revision 6766)+OBI on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 12x3TB disk in 3 vdev in RaidZ1 = 32TB Raw size only 22TB usable

Yes. One possibility is to use these scripts:
