[SOLVED] Suggest updating S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring Tools database

#1

Post by Snufkin » 13 Sep 2018 22:41

Recently HGST-HDN726040ALE614 disk has been added to S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring Tools database.

It would be great to include the updated database in one of the upcoming releases.

commit 6006 will allow you to update the drive database from a local file.

Add the following rc variable (System > Advanced > rc.conf):
system_rcconf_edit.php.png
and restart smartd.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
1) XigmaNAS 12.0.0.4 amd64-embedded on a Dell T20 running in a VM on ESXi 6.7U2, 22GB out of 32GB ECC RAM, LSI 9300-8i IT mode in passthrough mode. Pool 1: 2x HGST 10TB, mirrored, SLOG: Samsung 850 Pro, L2ARC: Samsung 850 Pro, Pool 2: 1x Samsung 860 EVO 1TB , services: Samba AD, CIFS/SMB, ftp, ctld, rsync, syncthing, zfs snapshots.
2) XigmaNAS 12.0.0.4 amd64-embedded on a Dell T20 running in a VM on ESXi 6.7U2, 8GB out of 32GB ECC RAM, IBM M1215 crossflashed, IT mode, passthrough mode, 2x HGST 10TB , services: rsync.

Good news!
Looking forward for the next XigmaNAS release.

Edit:
Meanwhile copy&pasted new lines in /etc/rc.d/smartd script and made sure smartd daemon found HGST drives in database.
Will smartctl utility share the same updated database?

to check if the information (REGEX etc) matches your drive, run

Code: Select all

smartctl -P show /dev/daX or adaX

For S.M.A.R.T. temperature logging please read the smartd configuration. Usually normalized values are displayed, to display raw values in addition please add "-r 190" or "-r 194" (depending on your drives capabilities) to the S.M.A.R.T. extra options in each disk setting.

Applied "-r 194", this is exactly HGST drive SMART attribute ID for "Temperature Celsius".

False alarm!
I was misled by old server log where records always appear every 30 minutes due to old Seagate PATA drives. Above disks are well known for their false Hardware ECC recovered messages they generate constantly.
But in new XNAS installation, the new HGST drives report temperature changes only.
And if disk temperature does not change, then nothing to report and write to the log.

Therefore, it was necessary to conduct tests when the temperature changes.
A simple fan speed controller confirmed 30 min polling (SMART log entries are presented in reverse order).
