How to find my Public IP through Xigmanas

#1

Post by Impulse1 »

Hi guys,

I'm assuming this is easy, I just don't know the right command. On Linux I usually use:

Code: Select all

curl ifconfig.me
But Curl doesn't seem to be available on Xigmanas (11.4.0.4.7718).

I'm trying to check if running my vpn service through a virtualmachine also changes my NAS's public IP.

It doesn't show my public IP address though, only the IP address on the local network. Here's the output from the ethernet port that's connected:

Code: Select all

em0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500
	options=9b<RXCSUM,TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,VLAN_HWCSUM>
	ether b0:53:98:c2:6a:d0
	hwaddr b0:53:98:c2:6a:d0
	inet 192.168.1.202 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255
	nd6 options=29<PERFORMNUD,IFDISABLED,AUTO_LINKLOCAL>
	media: Ethernet autoselect (1000baseT <full-duplex>)
	status: active
Is there an option I'm just missing?

Your NAS doesn't have a public IP; only a private (RFC1918) IP

Right, I see. All my devices connect via the internal network in my home to my router / modem which has the singular public IP.

Maybe I need to change my question a bit. On my linux virtual machine, hosted on my Xigmanas, I can run a third party VPN service that tunnels my connection outside of my home and makes it appear as if it does not use the same public IP as the rest of my equipment connected within my home. Since this virtual machine uses the same physical connection as my server, I was trying to figure out if my server traffic was also all being tunnelled. Would outside connections to my server see it as connecting through a device with my home's public IP or my VPN's public IP?

well that is easy. thanks guys.

And for anyone else wondering, No, the public address of Xigmanas isn't affected by the VPN service running on a virtual machine.

It won't do, because regardless of the internal setup both in hardware and software, to the outside world you'd still be using the same device i.e. a router with a single public ip address. This router will normally do the NAT for the internal network.
Main: Xigmanas 11.2.0.4 x64-full-RootOnZFS as ESXi VM with 24GB memory.
Main Host: Supermicro X8DT3 Memory: 72GB ECC; 2 Xeon E5645 CPUs; Storage: (HBA) - LSI SAS 9211-4i with 3 SATA x 1 TB in raidZ1, 1 x 3 TB SAS drive as single stripe, 3 x 4 TB SAS drives in raidZ1.
Spare1: HP DL360 G7; 6 GB ECC RAM; 1 Xeon CPU; 5 x 500 GB disks on H210i
Backup1: HP DL380 G7; 24 GB ECC RAM; 2 Xeon E5645 CPUs; 8 x 500 GB disks on IBM M1015 flashed to LSI9211-IT
