Ethernet + Wireless Interface.

#1

Post by plancton »

Hello, I am a very new user of NAS4Free and FreeBSD.

I have a system like this: http://i.imgur.com/RCiILHN.png

PC2 is running Windows 7, acessing internet via WIFI and connected (ethernet cross cable) to a netbook running NAS4FREE (ACER 1410 2287, 3GB, CELERON 1.2GHZ, 750GB 7200RPM WD HD, WIFI BOARD ATHEROS AR5B93)

I can use the NAS without problems with cable, im very happy with this =).

But i would like to enable the wifi in PC1 interface too because my internet signal is wireless. With this interface enabled I could use the NAS for torrents and share data with tablets and smartphones.

Unfortunattely I dont know how make this, it is possible?

I tried during long time to put my wireless board to work, but the status is always "no carrier" (with ifconfig via shell)

This is the result of ifconfig for ath0 (my OPT1 inferface, model Atheros AR5B93)

ath0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 2290
ether 0c:ee:e6:81:10:da
nd6 options=29<PERFORMNUD,IFDISABLED,AUTO_LINKLOCAL>
media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect (autoselect)
status: no carrier

I read about and tried:
- NDIS to compile drivers of windows to unix. (this is a driver problem? miss driver?) (I Dont tried this because i cant find the command to execute, do it work?)
- Clone interface with "ifconfig wlan0 create wlandev ath0", i tried and create other inactive interface

Some facts:
- The led of wifi is always off, the netbook has a mechanical switch (like a push button for toogle with touch) but nothing happens when clicked.
- I change the wifi pci for another wifi pci that i had here, and for this pci i cant see the interface in ifconfig.

I cant found a list of compatible wireless boards (half pci), where i can found it? i can buy other board if necessary.

Any other idea?
If need more data, please ask for it.

Best Regards!
FS

I know its been about 3 years.. maybe you have moved on or not.. However, later is better than never right?!?!?! Anywho, I found this article, this may assist you with what you are trying to accomplish.
Want to extend your computers WiFi Internet to another device via ethernet cable? We have the solution! This works to connect up X-Box, PS3, and other devices like WiFi Radios.

Microsoft has a functionality called Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) that is made just for this purpose. If the solution below does not answer your question then do some Googling on "ICS", there is a ton more info out there on this topic.

We will be using Windows 7, but earlier versions are similar. Be sure your Windows 7 computer is already connected to the Internet via wireless before you start.

CC WiFi Radio connected to a Window 7 Laptop

Click the Windows icon and type "view network connections", then hit "Enter" on your keyboard.

Right-click on the icon that represents your wireless connection to the internet, then left-click on "Properties"

Go to the "Sharing" tab and check the top box, then choose "Local Area Connection" from the drop down below. No need to check the second box. Just press "OK" at the bottom of the screen.

When everything is ready to go you will see the word "Shared" under your wireless connection to the Internet. Its sharing with your computers ethernet port (also called "Local Area Connection" on this screen).

Now you can connect an ethernet cable to your computers ethernet port and share internet to a second device.

Note: To return normal ethernet port functionality to your computer, just repeat the above and uncheck the top box, then press "OK"
