there was a problem during initializing the destination disk

#1

Post by ChriZathens »

Hi there, guys...
I was using an old Hitachi 30GB 2.5" IDE disk as the OS disk, but unfortunately it died. I had a 3.5" HDD with N4F installed and replaced the dead disk.
Today I wanted to use an old 6GB 2.5" Fujitsu IDE disk. So I downloaded version 9.0.0.1.228 and tried to install on the 6GB disk.
The liveCD boots OK, I select to install full on HDD I set a size of 2000MB, no swap.
The installation begins, reports creating slice partition but then it hangs with error "there was a problem during initializing the destination disk"
I tried to dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ada0 but kept getting error "geometry does not match label"
I then deleted the partition and did a surface scan to make sure the hdd is OK (thankfully only 6GB so did not take long..)
Then I tried to install again but no joy.. the same error "there was a problem during initializing the destination disk"
I am now zeroing the disk again (no geometry does not match label" error anymore ) and will see how it will act after that...
Any ideas why I am getting this error, please anyone?????

perhaps in BIOS you need to configure in AHCI mode if not work try IDE mode. check what mode used your old Hitachi and if new Fujitsu suport it
12.0.0.4 (revision 6766)+OBI on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 12x3TB disk in 3 vdev in RaidZ1 = 32TB Raw size only 22TB usable

I tried to dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ada0 but kept getting error "geometry does not match label"
This is not error, if you clear boot sector with partition tables, your disk will clean.
Test disk with gparted, as example, try to add slices to livecd system

Hi, alexey. I used hiren's boot cd and cleared the partitions. afterwards dd completed with no errors, so the geometry error seems fixed. But after trying to install again the same error "there was a problem during initializing the destination disk"
I am trying on a different disk now to see how it goes...

Good idea, Raul... I will look into it (since i am trying to perform the installation not on my NAS PC but on a Dell Optiplex GX520 (and i have seen a few incompatibilities in the past with them..)

EDIT: the other disk had no problems installing, but i will try ACHI to see if anything changes (the 6GB disk is very old so maybe that's the problem - in terms of condition it is fine, though..)

OK, I tried in bios to alter settings..
There is a menu there called SATA Operation with the options "Normal" and "Combination"
I had it in Normal, changed to combination, but still the same problem... damn....
I found this: http://support.freenas.org/browser/free ... l.install2
Inside /etc/rc.initial.install2there is this code:

Code: Select all

131	if (install_init_disk($harddrive, $partlayout)) {
132	        install_unmount_cd();
133	        tui_wait_keypress("There was a problem during initializing the destination disk.");
134	        exit(0);
What is this condition????

Any ideas, anyone?

You need find php function install_init_disk() in file /etc/inc/install.inc
In this function wrote many lines.. Uf you want study - Enjoy..

Begin study:
/etc/rc.initial ----> console menu
/etc/rc.initiall.install ----> first install menu, where you choice what are you build.
/etc/rc.initial.install1----> install embedded on disk, use full disk space
/etc/rc.initial.install2----> install embedded on disk with data and swap
/etc/rc.initial.install3----> install full with data and swap
I used hiren's boot cd and cleared the partitions.
You have Frebsd/unix. WTF Hirens bootcd? Fire it :twisted: :o

I have good idea - replace hard disk cabels

Lol about Hiren's
It's good though...
Has a lot of tools and has proven really useful in the past...Besides that I don't know how to fix this is FreeBSD (I am not a total noob but I am no expert, either - far from it I would say)

The error I get is Failed to create BSD label on ada0s1! (stupid me I reported only the topic subject error before.. :oops: )
According to /etc/inc/instll.inc:

Code: Select all

490	        // Create disk labels.
491	        write_console("Create BSD label on slice/partition:\n");
492	        foreach ($partlayout as $partlayoutv) {
493	                $diskdevicename = "{$disk}s{$partlayoutv['slice']}";
494	                $startsector = $partinfo[$partlayoutv['slice']]['start'];
495	                $slicesize = $partinfo[$partlayoutv['slice']]['size'];
496
497	                write_console("  {$diskdevicename}\n");
498
499 // Do not create partitions for swap.
500	                if ("swap" === $partlayoutv['fstype']) {
501 // Completely wipe any prior information
502	                        if (mwexec("/bin/dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/{$diskdevicename} bs=512 count=34")) {
503	                                write_console("\nError: Failed to wipe any prior information on {$diskdevicename}.\n");
504	                                return 1;
505	                        }
506	                        continue;
507	                }
508
509	                if (install_bsdlabel($diskdevicename, $partlayoutv['fstype'], $startsector, $slicesize, $alignsector)) {
510	                        write_console("\nError: Failed to create BSD label on {$diskdevicename}!\n");
511	                        return 1;
And install_bsdlabel:

Code: Select all

663	function install_bsdlabel($disk, $fstype, $startsector, $slicesize, $alignsector)
664	{
665	        global $g;
666
667	        // Check sectors
668	        if ($startsector == '' || $slicesize == '' || $alignsector ==''
669	            || $alignsector < 1 || $slicesize < $alignsector) {
670	                write_console("\nError: Invalid parameter on {$disk}.\n");
671	                return 1;
672	        }
673	        $poffset = 16;
674	        $aligned_start = ceil(($startsector + $poffset) / $alignsector) * $alignsector;
675	        $aligned_start -= $startsector;
676	        $aligned_counts = $slicesize - $aligned_start;
677	        $aligned_counts = floor($aligned_counts / $alignsector) * $alignsector;
678
679 // Completely wipe any prior information on the partition
680	        if (mwexec("/bin/dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/{$disk} bs=512 count=2048")) {

684
685 // Do an automatic label first
686	        if (mwexec("/sbin/bsdlabel -w -B {$disk}")) {
687	                write_console("\nError: Failed to write standard label.\n");
688	                return 1;

711	                                $val);

716	                }

718
719	        // Closing file
720	        fclose($fd);
721
722	        // Injecting modified label
723	        if (mwexec("/sbin/bsdlabel -R -B {$disk} {$g['tmp_path']}/label.tmp")) {
724	                write_console("\nError: Failed to write modified label.\n");
725	                return 1;
726	        }
727
728	        // Cleanup
729	        unlink("{$g['tmp_path']}/label.tmp");
730
731	        return 0;
732	}
Since I see sectors involved then you think that perhaps it has to do with the previous geometry error?
Any advice on how I should fix this using n4f livecd? I tried bsdlabel command which showed me the disk label info, but wouldn't know what to edit/correct before, that's why I used hiren's to wipe the partition info...
I now exited in shell, executed bsdlabel -e /dev/ada0 and I get "no valid label found"
Any advice on how to proceed would be great...

check supply +5v and +12V
Try install embedded on full disk
check with gpart
Try install system on another computer with your harddisk as destination. After install - put hard disk in problemly PC

Hi again, Alexey and thanks for your suggestions!

The power may be an issue, but I am using an adapter to convert 3.5" data cable to 2.5" with its own power cable...
I have a spare adapter I will try to use and see if there is the issue

I have already tried the embedded but got errors, too.
I will try again tomorrow, though...

I gave gpart a go but I did not know how to use it...

This computer is not my NAS, I wanted to install it there mainly because I wanted to check the translation and make necessary corrections if needed. But for this job I guess I can also use a vm..

I will try again tomorrow, not because I need this hdd to work, but just because of the sake of it...

Well I am at work now and forgot to take with me the spare adapter I have... damn..
Trying to install embedded (option 1) I get failed to dd and errors about the geometry of the disk

I also tried to install version .228 (x86 - got lazy to enable x64 virtualization from my laptop BIOS) on a vm... I get the same problem like on the small 2.5" HDD: "there was a problem during initializing the destination disk"
The embedded installed, though...
I am downloading .236 x86 now to see what will happen in the VM
Version .236 returned the same errors too, though, when I tried to install to the small HDD

EDIT: Version .236 installed in the VM (full install) without any problems

boot.catalog - file
mfsroot.gz - file
NAS4Free-<arch>-embedded.gz ---> this is image will clone on disk later.
Done all that... Using the file manager I see

You need only check how to system read your hard disk. May be ada0, ad0 or da0. For example ada0
after your check name make
Create ramdisk

Code: Select all

mkdir /mnt/img
mdmfs -s 200m md /mnt/img
Copy and unzip image

Code: Select all

cp /mnt/cdrom/NAS4Free-x64-embedded.gz /mnt/img/
cd /mnt/img
gunzip NAS4Free-x64-embedded.gz
Write image to your disk ada0
dd if= /mnt/img/NAS4Free-x64-embedded of=/dev/ada0 bs=512
reboot

OK, done that, but at the gunzip it throws me out of the shell and to the console menu
I reenter shell, cd /mnt/img, still the .gz is there - no extraction was made...

A thank you mod is very useful for this board
I am sure you would be a "thanks" champion!
Thank you very much for your guidance!

EDIT: after a lot of retries to unzip I get out of swap space error... I will add a 2GB ram module and in the command

Code: Select all

mdmfs -s 200m md /mnt/img
, instead of 200mb I will enter 1024.. Will this help?

Attach your computer to network. Define IP adress for it and go to webinterface.
You have Advanced|Execute command on web interface.
Just copy-paste
instead of 200mb I will enter 1024.. Will this help?
When you boot from cd, you not have reserve space for store image file. For do it, we create memory disk. No need more then 200m

???
I was doing it in shell but will try advanced|execute command, too..
The thing is that now, after inserting a 2gb ram module, after all begins normally, when i enter mkdir /mnt/img it reports that file system is read-only.... WTF???? I will throw it out of the window

OK I managed to make it work in /mnt anyways...
I go all the way and in the dd command from webgui i get nothing.
I go to shell, execute dd command and then, I get a lot of errors like:

Yes, although various disk checking programs reported it as OK...
.. I will throw the disk out of the window and stop bugging you. It took too much...

P.S.:The version I am messing with now is .236 which seems to have no problems, I guess... (answer regarding the removal of builds)

I did a surface scan using one of the disk utilities there, in hiren's boot cd and reported no errors on the drive ( no bad clusters)
I will check it again tomorrow ( it has only 6GB so disk tests are fast...)

Update: Just performed a few tests on my disk.
Used Fujitsu HDD Diagnostics utility, Victoria, HDD Regenerator and HDD sentinel to check the drive. All of them reported drive health good without any errors on the disk...
I guess I will post my info too in the other topic - perhaps it will help daoyama more...

Do not throw your disc.
I have problems with my 8G 15 years old disk, but now it work fine.
Now I try install nas4free on 2 another old disk, 5-6 years old 40G Samsung and 80G maxtor, and I have troubles. Hirens also test its as OK
During installation any warnings, but it not make reboot.
May be Daoyama help us understand problem.

I finally got the new adapters yesterday afternoon and just gave it a try using 9.0.0.1.249...
I got the same error: "Error: Failed to write standard label. Failed to create BSD label on ada0s1!"
I tried giving dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ada0 for a couple of minutes and then hitting Ctrl+C in order to destroy the partition info it maybe holds (saw this trick somewhere else in this forum..)
But again the same error...
Also tried to install embedded...
I got (again): geometry does not match label :(

I am currently downloading .262 and will post the results...

EDIT: OK, using .262 results:
at the beginning I got
kern.geom.debugflags: 0 -> 16 and then
I got a lot of CAM statua and ATA status errors and finally
Error: Failed to write standard label.
kern.geom.debugflags: 16 -> 0

My next test will be to try the x86 version on this PC and then I will try on a different PC (which is not 64bit, so I cannot try the x_64 there..)

I got the exact errors, both in embedded and full installation, using the x86 of .262 version...

EDIT: Tried on a different PC: HP Compaq DC5000 sff..
x86 version..
It won't boot at all...
hangs with the error: "ctl: can't allocate 200 entry other SC pool, exiting... :?: :?: :?: :?:
will now try another pc: dell optiplex gx270
result : Won't boot, starts but after a while keeps ejecting the cd.. Not a valid test- cdrom may be faulty (and it's a slim one, so I must find a replacement which I won't do now, lol)

For sure it is not Compaq problem, because Compaq is the only one who succeeded..
Hp Compaq seems to have issues, though (every other PC booted just fine)
And I guess Dell is a bit difficult...
But in the first Dell GX-520 I managed to install without errors on a different HDD (both a 2,5" with adapter and a 3,5" without adapter)
I cannot give any safe conclusions... Perhaps the combination of the PCs and the HDD (and perhaps FreeBSD 9 - but I must find a freenas iso, which was based on FreeBSD 7.x in order to test this )
If I manage to find such an iso I will report my results...
