LSI SAS 9300-4i HBA: First HDD not recognized

#1

Post by diamondave » 05 Mar 2016 19:12

Hi all

I have a Supermicro System up and running with the LSI SAS 9300-4i HBA, which runs with a LSI SAS3004 Chip. On the BIOS of the Controller, I can see all Harddisks. I can Format and Verify them. But when I boot into NAS4Free, Build 10.2.0.2.2332 I can't see the first disk of the Array. I swapped around, changed the disk to another Bay, then I can see the Disk. Every Disk in Bay0 is not been seen. I made Clear Config, Imported all the Disks new, installed the system new. I made a downgrade of the Firmware of the SAS Controller ot Version 9 (IT).

No change. I'm ended up...

Attached I upload the dmesg.

Any idea? Should I switch to another Controller?

Kind regards, Dave

Update... Seems that it is a problem known with LSI Controller...

http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/free ... 06545.html

Are there any suggestions for a good HBA, that works well with NAS4Free?

No. I'm not shure if I really would do this... I'm really careful with hacks like this. For me, it has to run out of the box. The system is running the next 4 years 24/7. So it's for me very important that it is stable from the beginning.

And on the next side, I have to setup a Linux-System specially for using this utility. This costs me about one hour. That costs also money. And I haven't find a actual build of the tool...

What is about this HBA? http://www.avagotech.com/products/serve ... as-9211-4i
Is this card recommendable?

the LSI SAS 9300-4i has the new connector type for 12gb/sec
the SAS 9211-4i has the old 6gb/sec connectors.

but from the linked mail they said the fix never made it upstream on the LSI2008. so the SAS 9211-4i is not an option then.

check the hardware compatibility list. (however i have no experience with those other cards)

some possibilities
RocketRAID 272x
ARC-1320-4i4x
you could also try a ibm m1015 in megaraid mode. this is an lsi chip, but it uses a completely different firmware and driver.

Perhaps get a Dell Perc H310 (LSI-9240 OEM), can quite often found cheap on ebay.

This controllers are based on the LSI SAS2008 Chipset? Can I also buy a LSI SAS 9211 Card? Are there (exception the price) differences?

Well try it like it is, in my opinion this should work, else the 'IT Firmware' can be flashed later....

Hi,

I installed the new HBA, it is ok so long. But one time I booted the NAS, I didn't see all Drives againg. Bootet again, all drives OK. Can you tell me which Version of the IT Firmware for SAS2004 is recommended?

Attached you find the Log doing "dmesg | grep mps"

normally its the same version as the driver.
it should be written in the dmesg log.
