How close do Firmware & Driver need to be matched?

#1

Post by eagle3000 » 01 Aug 2018 23:57

Hi,

1. I successfully flashed a DELL H200 with LSI Firmware and BIOS. Used version P14. (9211_8i_Package_P14_IR_IT_Firmware_BIOS_for_MSDOS_Windows.zip)
2. One of my Nas4Free servers is old and still running 9.1.0.1 - Sandstorm (revision 573).
3. This H200 card is to be used to upgrade this old server, and is now installed inside.
4. After the command :dmesg | grep “mps0: Firmware”
I get
Firmware: 14.00.01.00, Driver: 14.00.00.01-fbsd

Q: I was reading other posts which indicate that both the firmware and the Bios need to be IDENTICAL.
Here, I have both at version 14, but differ slightly as noted.

Do I need to have them match? i.e. Do I need to dig a 14.00.01.00 fbsd driver from somewhere?

Thanks!
:)

mps0: <Avago Technologies (LSI) SAS2308> port 0xe000-0xe0ff mem 0xf7240000-0xf724ffff,0xf7200000-0xf723ffff irq 17 at device 0.0 on pci2
mps0: Firmware: 20.00.07.00, Driver: 21.02.00.00-fbsd

I use latest LSI firmware and use latest driver as provided in 11.2.0.4 series.
they are no longer in the same range as it was in the past!

make sure you use the latest (IT) firmware version you can get.
System specs: XigmaNAS 11.2.0.4 -embedded on Samsung 860 EVO 256GB and Supermicro X10SL7-F w / Bios v3.2, IPMI v.03.84 / CPU E3-1241 v3 @ 3.50GHz - 32GB Crucial DDR3L 1600mhz ECC 1.35v , LSI 2308 on PH20.00.07.00 IT mode, Storage: 5x Western Digital Red (WD30EFRX) raidz

Development system is same system in virtualbox.

The latest ones can be downloaded for LSI cards from Broadcom's webpage I think.

https://www.broadcom.com/support/download-search

Legacy products.

I am interested in where to find the actual driver that is being used in freebsd? In the latest 11.2 FreeBSD release notes it just says:

Code: Select all

These controllers are supported by the mps(4) driver:

Broadcom Ltd./Avago Tech (LSI) SAS 2004 (4 Port SAS)

Broadcom Ltd./Avago Tech (LSI) SAS 2008 (8 Port SAS)

Broadcom Ltd./Avago Tech (LSI) SAS 2108 (8 Port SAS)
mps version is what I should be after?

Thanks

In my experience CAM errores are due cables or bad phisicall conections.
If You have some plug to extract the disk, eliminate it connecting the disk direct to sata connectors.

Yea, that's the idea, I'll hook the disk up to the 4th connector. I have 3 disks attached to this card.

It has 4x SATA ports, so have another free connection to try it with. I'll also replace all 3 cables.

But I already had to remove the card to flash the bios in another machine and I doubt that I managed to put all 3 cables back to the original disks :) When I first saw this, it was also da2 disk, same disk even. But cable is what I suspect to be at fault too.

Will update the post after I see what happens.

Thanks guys for the support!

No worryes about data cables order, You only need to update new hd order in webgui, And sync ZFS webgui with real order disk.

In fact You can move your ZFS pool to other motherboard without problem.

PD: only valid for ZFS pools, not for UFS RAID

Yea, I still have the same zfs pool on the 3rd machine :) since freenas 7 series or something :)

But grrr, this same error comes up after swapping for brand new high quality cables.

da2 still, so now the disk goes to the 4th connector on the card. Fingers crossed....

Ah, now another drive... I found some reference in FreeNAS forums to the same chipset and similar errors.

Seems that the card can overhear.
My HBA was overheating. So I recommend you ensure it's properly cooled.

In this article the user also put a small fan on it. Will try and see if the error is back using the card with a small fan attached.
