SCSI over IDE?

This seems to be the most relevant place to post this, I hope it's OK here but feel free to move if necessary.

Last week my old FreeNAS server's HD crashed (whole different story, looks like I lost that data) so I figured this would be a good time to upgrade to NAS4Free.
An old DELL seemed the most suitable (read: 'newest') piece of hardware I had lying around:

DELL Dimension XPS R400
- Pentium II
- 384 MB RAM
- Maxtor IDE 12GB, master on first IDE channel
- HLDS (Hitachi) GCR-8481B CD-ROM, master on second IDE channel

Turns out I was wrong; it doesn't even complete booting the Live CD.
If there is a way to pause the screen or otherwise have access to dmesg's output, I haven't found it :(, so I can only type the last thing I see on the screen:

So at that point, I'm figuring:
1) This is fairly deep into the booting process and reading from the CD-ROM up to that point wasn't a problem, so it's not like there's something fundamentally wrong with the hardware
2) They're all IDE devices, so for some reason this Dell wants to use SCSI-over-IDE or something?

Trying to find more clues, I put in my SystemRescueCD disk (http://www.sysresccd.org), it ALSO had issues booting, looking quite similar. Just for fun I unplug both CD-ROM drives and replace them with the unit listed above. System Rescue now boots, so then I'm thinking maybe I've solved my problem? No, of course not :). At least it gave me the opportunity to go through dmesg output - appended below (at the bottom, I'm mounting my flash drive to copy the output).

Bear in mind SystemRescue is Gentoo Linux based w/r to device names, but it looks like initially everything works fine, hard disk and CD-ROM drive get recognized as ATA drives, but then they are assigned SCSI device names. The HD isn't used so it doesn't matter, but once the CD-ROM drive has become "sr" we see a bunch of failed attempts to access the device - not unlike the final dmesg lines I copied above (perhaps because the device is already in use?).

Any clues as to what's going on here, anyone?

Hmmm... I like the idea of ​​using old PC as a server, but not that much older. In first, 384 MB not enough memory to load liveCD or liveUSB. In this case you can try extract hard disk and make install on most modern PC, with 512M RAM.

Hello,

My smallest system is a P2-350 with 384MB RAM, powered by FreeNAS 0.69.2
It runs without issues, so my first ideas are:

- Run Memtest86+, damaged memory can have the strangest effects
- Check if the harddrives are really in a good condition
- Replace IDE cables, have had some damaged cables which looked good but have had broken wires inside
- Make sure that Master/Slave is correct jumpered, some drives have different setting fo a single master and when a slave is connected
- Connect MASTER at the outer side from the cable, SLAVE in the middle
- Run the FULL installed on a hardddisk, your RAM is too small for the Ramdisk the embedded needs to operate

If you do not get NAS4Free or an older FreeNAS release to run I recommend the Linux distri NasLite.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/naslite/ Burn the iso and use it to install the OS to a Floppy disk.
The disadvantage, because a whole operating system including the server application must fit on one floppy you must decide if you will setup an SMB, NFS or FTP server. Likewise it lacks on tools like MediaServer or user/group setups, so it is an open system. On the other hand it is fast and runs on old hardware equipped with IDE drives. My smallest NASLite system was a P1-100MHz with 64MB RAM.

BTW, the CD contains images for Mega and Gigabit networks. Because the harddrives are identified from the operating system and not by the BIOS you can put in 250GB drives into a P2 board which is normally limited to 32GB drives without issues :-)

Not totally sure, but I remember that minimun RAM is 512MB, so no longer install works on 384MB machines ( once installed, can work).

So please use use embed to boot instead live CD. ( create embeded on your desktop PC)

I search about it this error last night and found a website as you can see
