Looking for more zip-spiff-POW! for my Supermicro X10SL7-F

#1

Post by idmah »

When I built my Xigma (then nas4free)
I got the Supermicro X10SL7-F and and x64-embedded on Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4170 CPU @ 3.70GHz, 8 gig ram.
with 6 X 6 TB drives.

Write performance hasn't been great, and I'd like to add a mail server and maybe a Virtual machine or two.
I've got a bit of cash and would like to spiff it up a bit.

Would there be a benefit to switching to a XEON ? Any recommendations?
thanks

Go for the cheapest used XEON you can get hold off for your socket, this should be sufficient. I had an i3-2100 with around 40-50% usage of the cores. Since I have my Xeon E3-1245v2 I don't reach 10% usage. There is a lot of unused CPU-Power if you get a XEON into the system.

Found an Intel Xeon SR154 E3-1220V3 3.10GHz 8MB 4 Core CPU on Ebay for $35!
that should be an ok upgrade? Right?
