recommended tips/settings for Asrock C2550D4I?

hello,

this is my first server motherboard. I'm not yet familiar with many terms that I see in manual (like IPMI) but what worries me more is that I see many posts on the Internet that these motherboards tend to fail after two years or so due to some issue with too many NAND memory writes (?). from what I can read this issue seems to be corrected with newest BIOS (or some other firmware that I'm not familiar with yet) but anyway, I would like to ask you for some guidance what should be done first to minimize the risk of motherboard failure. what settings related to that "too many NAND writes" should be set in BIOS to "safe value"? I would appreciate your recommendations. some other things I plan to do are: 1) update BIOS to newest one, 2) place heatsinks on Marvell chips -- what else?

thank you,
geos

the problem was in the cpu. nothing you could do there.

You need to check the stepping of the cpu. if it is B0 you are affected. Newer board should not be affected.
Nas4Free 11.1.0.4.4517. Supermicro X10SLL-F, 16gb ECC, i3 4130, IBM M1015 with IT firmware. 4x 3tb WD Red, 4x 2TB Samsung F4, both GEOM AES 256 encrypted.

thanks for reply.

I checked stepping with more /proc/cpuinfo | grep stepping and got four "stepping : 8". dmidecode also shows "8". I'm a bit unsure as "B" is similar to "8" is this "8" really OK? any other ways of checking it to be sure? intel document mentions steppings B0 and C0, i don't see "8" there...

and one more question. I understand that actually there were two issues: one with CPU itself and one with NAND wear. first one is corrected with new CPU stepping, the other one with corrected BMC code from 0.30 up -- is this correct?

thank you,
geos

check the bios. the revision might be printed there.

"these motherboards tend to fail after two years"

Regarding the C2X50D4i do not forget to put a small radiator on the 2 Marvell controllers, they are real heaters !!
80°c --95° without heatsink
50°c --55° with heatsink, lifetime, 42 months for mine.

thanks guys. yep, I placed heatsinks already. It looks like watchdog is turned off by default and I'm not going to turn it on.

@sleid, do you have C2550C4I with B0 or C0 CPU revision?

Edit:
I suppose it may be useful information for others. I contacted Asrock support and they told me that my motherboard was "B0+ fix". it was surprise for me as I thougnt there were only B0 and C0 editions. "B0+ fix" means that CPU revision is still B0 but they changed hardware a bit to make workaround for C2000 bug and avoid failure caused by this bug in future. it is written C2550D4I/LPC on the box of the motherboard but I'm not sure if this or serial number or part number allows to identify such board.

thank you,
