Unable to create raid5

#1

Post by kanubis » 10 Jan 2019 18:33

This is my first experience with XigmaNAS, I am trying to create a raid5 on a virtual machine in VMWARE esXi 5.5.

The settings are required this way, I have no choice:

- The hdd with the system is 8Gb
- The Raid 5 setup is as follow: three 1 GB disks

XigmaNAS version: 11.2.0.4.6315

What I did:
1) Imported disks
2) Format them Filesystem: SoftRaid
3) Went to disk > Raid software > RAID 0/1/5 > Adminitration but I can't do anything there, I don't even have the + button

I understand I have to create an array group but I have no choice and I don't know why.

suport for creation of RAID (geom RAID) are deprecated, try to create a RaidZ1 instead
12.0.0.4 - BETA (revision 6625)+OBI on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 12x3TB disk in 3 vdev in RaidZ1 = 32TB Raw size only 22TB usable

Thanks for the quick answer, unfortunately that's not an option. Do you know what's the last version that supported RAID5 and, if possible, where can I download it?

Would it be possible for you to explain why ZFS is not an option for you? ZFS uses a copy-on-write logic with self-healing capabilities. RAIDZ1 performs better than RAID5 and doesn't have the write hole and provides the same redundancy.

Also please provide more information about your system like XigmaNAS version etc.
1) XigmaNAS 11.2.0.4 amd64-embedded on a Dell T20 running in a VM on ESXi 6.7, 22GB out of 32GB ECC RAM, LSI 9300-8i IT mode in passthrough mode. Pool 1: 2x HGST 10TB, mirrored, SLOG: Samsung 850 Pro, L2ARC: Samsung 850 Pro, Pool 2: 1x Samsung 860 EVO 1TB , services: Samba AD, CIFS/SMB, ftp, ctld, rsync, syncthing, zfs snapshots.
2) XigmaNAS 11.2.0.4 amd64-embedded on a Dell T20 running in a VM on ESXi 6.7, 8GB out of 32GB ECC RAM, IBM M1215 crossflashed, IT mode, passthrough mode, 1x HGST 10TB , services: rsync.

It's an exercise from trade school, it's not going to be used for anything beyond testing the skills of the students to face systems we aren't familiar with. I'll talk with the teacher today about deprecating RAID-5 and trying RAIDZ1 which we haven't tried either.

Xigmanas version is 11.2.0.4.6315 (downloaded recently from the site), there is one in the centre shared folder 11.2.0.4.24xx (I can't remember the exact number, I'll edit later)

if you need RAID 5, perhaps OMV is best option to you
12.0.0.4 - BETA (revision 6625)+OBI on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 12x3TB disk in 3 vdev in RaidZ1 = 32TB Raw size only 22TB usable

I can't either, the requirements are XigmaNAS with 1 disk for the OS and 3 for RAID-5, then a Linux desktop (whatever distro we want) with 3 disks, 1 with the OS and 2 raid1 (for the home partition) and same thing with Windows. I can't really change systems only disk size once it's all setup we have to share and synchronize folders with the NAS.

That's why I asked if there was an older version with raid 5 support. I'll try later this morning with a XIgmaNAS 11.2.0.2xxx iso.

Thanks for all the help though, this seems like a great community.

On rev 6131 The option to create a softraid has been removed, existing softraid configurations are not impacted.
Softraid will be marked as deprecated in future 12.x series.

ok, test raidZ1 you can see that is best than a normal geom RAID and no need more resources (RAM or CPU)
