GEOM RAID1 GPT table is corrupt or invalid

#1

Post by Edgaras »

Hello ALL,

First of all I am new in freeBSD and sorry for being not very technical.

This system was installed by other person who left so I am here to get the data off it.

I really hope you will be able to advise me.

History:

There was a FreeNAS 7 (I presume as it was done log time ago) installed with GEOM Raid1 with two TG sata drives. OS was on usb stick. After the system could not boot I found that the usb stick is corrupted. So then decided to install fresh 8.3 ver on a new stick and do Auto Import to import the existing volume.

After I installed I was able to import the volume using webGUI but can not see any files. It is showing on the GUI the usage of the volume but no shares.

When booting I see error message:
GEOM: mirror/Raid1drive: the secondary GPTtable is corrupt or invalid.
GEOM: mirror/Raid1drive: using the primary only -- recovery suggested.

I can not effort just trying some commands I find on the web not being familar with that as the data is vital for the customer. Do not want to destroy it complety(of course if is not destroyed completely yet).

Can somebody advise here what to do at this stage? Is there any hope at all to get the data off? Is there a way to view the file via SHELL?

I really apreciate for any help.

Edgaras

Following the wiki I should ignore the error. I am ok with that but that does not solve the problem as I can not see data in the raid1 volume - see the usage of it but can not see the shared folders...

Does it mean that I can not do anything at this point to get the data off?

More info is needed.
please open a shell and try to go to your mount point and do a ls -l
remember that import one RAID is not the same that mount the volume, perhaps you need the last step (mount array).

This is like "chicken or egg dilemma".

If you have correct GPT headers, then create the geom RAID.
You may see broken header after starting up the geom RAID. (running state)

If you have no GPT headers, then create the geom RAID.
You may see broken header after stopping(before starting) the geom RAID. (mostly boot/shutdown time)

There is no way preventing this if you use geom RAID.

I did ls-l under the mount point /mnt/Raid1drivep1 and I can see the documents listed.

What next steps I should do? As I am really new here could I get instructions like for dumbs?:)

Thanks in advance!

I am getting my hope back...

now you need to go to SMB section and share your folders ( not share Raid1drivep1) , share folders that you have inside the mounpoint. (If you don't have folders, please create ones like documents, Photos, Video, etc...)

Please read doc: http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=do ... _smb_samba

Thanks for you reply.

I created a shared folder inside the mountpoint and browsed on the network and was able to see all files which are in the volume (In other words fantastic).

I am now copying the files to new storage. It is a great start for the weekend:)

Thanks for your support!

Just to add, you can use WINSCP to transfer files from the UNIX/Linux base systems to a windows platform. You just need to enable SSH and permit root login. Hope this is helpful if someone is in a jam!
