Sync Time for New Raid 5? Speed Up?

#1

Post by TurboNewb »

I am building a new UFS-Raid 5 based on this setup guide http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=do ... management

The array consists of 4-4TB segate 7200rpm drives. The process has been going for more than 18 hours and is less than 0.1% synchronized (3750756352 of 4000787030016). At this rate would take over 100 days to complete. This was all without formatting or mounting the disks. Based on the setup article after 18 hours I formatted and mounted to test. Performance was approximately equal to the throughput of a carrier pigeon.

What could be the issue here? All disks show as online.

Hardware:
SuperMicro Mainboard - dual Xeon processors
32Gb Ram
2X - LSI 9211 Flashed to IT mode

if you have a server mainboard why are you using raid 5 and not raidz1?
Nas4Free 11.1.0.4.4517. Supermicro X10SLL-F, 16gb ECC, i3 4130, IBM M1015 with IT firmware. 4x 3tb WD Red, 4x 2TB Samsung F4, both GEOM AES 256 encrypted.

Because ZFS starts to get cranky if you utilize more than 80% of the drive capacity. ZFS is being used for an additional pool where long term data integrity is most important rather than capacity. This pool is being used for security camera footage where a small amount of redundancy is nice, hence raid 5, but we really want to fill the drives to 95% capacity. Not worried about bit rot, silent corruption frames are stored individually so it doesn't matter if one in a thousand is bad. If necessary we can move to ZFS and buy more disks, or use in JBOD without any redundancy.

UFS raid5 seemed to be the happy medium if it will actually work.

Hmmm...same for me.

5 x 4 TB discs, rebuildung status at 0,1% after 15 hours.

Everything else works just fine, but this would take years to finish!!

Any ideas?

TIA

Cheers
