XigmaNAS Full(RootOnZFS) WebGUI Firmware Upgrades fully Supported

#1

Post by JoseMR »

Hello everyone, the NAS4Free Team is really pleased to announce that NAS4Free Full RootOnZFS installs now fully supports WebGUI Firmware Upgrades as for Revision 4159, either single or mirrored installations for convenience, but not limited to, you can still perform legacy upgrades from booting LiveMedia as well.

This is possible thanks to the ZFS snapshots "Boot Environments" and the "beadm" utility under the hood, so each upgrade is eventually a clone of the previous Boot Environment with latest files added, sou you can switch between Boot Environments as you like, take snapshots, auto-snapshots and much more.

The Full Firmware Upgrade is performed in the same exact way of any Embedded installation, but instead of downloading the latest file ending in .XZ, you will need the latest file ending in .TGZ, for example: "NAS4Free-x64-full-11.0.0.4.XXXX.tgz", then just follow WebGUI instructions, no is CLI required for upgrades. ;)

EDIT: Online Information is added for latest firmware (TGZ) file wen available.

Sorry for late reply, I've made some basic tests with success, but AFAIK there should be no problem restoring an Embedded config to Full and vise-versa regardless of the file system, though you my need to execute "zpool import -f -a" and/or resync pools from WebGUI to make the system fully aware of the zroot pool.

Hello welcome to the forum, NAS4Free Full "RootOnZFS"(For Advanced/Experienced users) is the only version supporting WebGUI Firmware upgrades, it requires an initial "fresh" install, or an upgrade through the LiveMedia in case you are running an older NAS4Free RootOnZFS version.

NAS4Free Full "UFS" does not support WebGUI Firmware upgrades, only through the LiveMedia is possible.

Note: After each WebGUI upgrade, a logout and login back is required for some browsers to avoid cache issues.

Because nature of Full install, actually is only possible to upgrade from webgUI on embeded and on ZFSOnRoot install.

Hello alex, like Raul denoted, Firmware upgrades is a NAS4Free Embedded or NAS4Free Full RootOnZFS only feature, look for "Advanced RootOnZFS Install" menu option.

Yes that Option launch the advanced RootOnZFS installer, supporting "Full WebGUI Upgrades" from the (.TGZ) files which can be downloaded from SourceForge upon new releases, latest release also support latest "Boot Environments" additions plus UEFI.

Note that the most sane options are preset in the RootOnZFS installer, if you get abit overwhelmed by the available Options, please don't hesitate to ask,
additionally please consider high quality USB3.0 for the installation media, or even better any spare HDD or SSD.

Really sorry to overlook this, Upgrades will overwrite/replace NAS4Free core files i.e WebGUI pages, profiles etc, but it will respect user added files indeed, this is the default behavior to maintain stability and ensure user don't miss required updated base files, however any modified core files will remain intact in the previous Boot Environment snapshot, thus advanced users can use the "beadm" utility to mount the BE and pull files accordingly.

As for the content in "/root", only default profiles gets updated, any other content such as .ssh/RSA shared profiles etc is respected there, therefore any newly added package such as midnight-commander, htop, zrep etc etc will remains/persist across reboots/upgrades. ;)

Hello, just select Option #1 Stripe to install to a single device(no redundancy), after carefully choosing the target disk for installation, just press Enter for the the rest of the options/questions to install with the most sane defaults(recommended), unless you know what you are doing of course. ;)

By the way, don't hesitate to ask.

If not posible connect to webGUI, use option 11 or 12 in shell menu.

Hello, "413 Request Entity Too Large errors occur when the request body is larger than the server is configured to allow", and may not be related to RootOnZFS, between I saw you have 4GB RAM, maybe you were running abit too tight on memory with no swap?

I'm personally pushing some testing with as low as 2GB RAM in rootonzfs and still pretty solid here, please perform a reboot and try again, if the error occurs please post log output to see if we can help you upgrade from the webGUI as it should be.

Ok man! I've found my problem!
I have an iMac and macOS, downloading the new firmware, when download completes the .tgz file is decompresses in a .tar file!!!
I didn't notice that, so I was trying to upload a "wrong" file...
This morning I deleted the file downloaded some day ago, and made a new download, so I noticed macOS uncompressing the file! So I've take back from the bin the original .tgz file and the upload was succesfull!!!
Now I'm waiting the system upgrade...
Thanks everybody!

Hello, I don't know from what Full Platform you've upgraded(your sig points back to 10.3?), however as for Revision 6165 XigmaNAS RootOnZFS Platform requires a reinstall(recommended) since it follows "bsdinstall" ZFS install procedures, alternatively if no reinstall is possible, manual dataset setup is also possible if already experienced with ZFS, note that there will be no more reinstall needed after Rev. 6165 hopefully, even on major version releases, since each Boot Environment holds its own boot/kernel code separately.

Back on topic, XigmaNAS RootOnZFS Firmware Upgrades only affects the boot media/boot environment, to be more specific "zroot/ROOT/bename", so I'm quite not sure how an upgrade can cause the lost of user data.

TIP: If you switched from Embedded or Full UFS to XigmaNAS RootOnZFS, after config import, you may need to execute "zpool import -f -a" and/or re-import/synchronize the ZFS pools/datasets to let the WebGUI to be aware of it initially.

P.S If you encountered an issue with a RootOnZFS WebGUI Upgrade, simply rollback to the previous Boot Environment until the specific issue can be solved.

To list Boot Environments:

Code: Select all

beadm list
To rollback to a previous working BE(reboot after activation):

Code: Select all

beadm activate bename-xxxx-xx-xx-xxxxxxx
To easily perform this steeps from a Text User Interface(TUI), take a look HERE

i found the following little "BUG".
I updated some of my Harddrives (now i have less) -> root pool changed from da23 to da21

when i now go to Wegui Firmware Upgrade:

Hi jasch, sorry for late response, what comes in to mind is that the "/etc/cfdevice" is not pointing for the correct drive(s) hence the error, between you may manually edit that file and re-try the upgrade.

Since RootOnZFS uses gpt/labels unlike Embedded, I will try to fix this bug soon to make the platform independent from this file while upgrading.

EDIT: Please just edit "/etc/cfdevice" and add the below lines for a RootOnZFS mirrored installation:

Code: Select all

/dev/gpt/sysdisk0
/dev/gpt/sysdisk1
Or for a single disk installation:

Code: Select all

/dev/gpt/sysdisk0
If the RootOnZFS has been installed in other RAID configuration type, just add the relevant drives to it, this bug will be fixed for the next release.
