RAM RAM and more RAM!

Post by audiophil »

4 gigs is not enough!

Testing a pool made of a single RAIDZ1 vdev of 4 2TB hard drives on my hardware combo. . .
@4gb ram my AFP throughput and cpu utilization was terribly spikey, but averaged out to ~50-60 MB/s.
@8gb ram the spikes softened, with the peaks ranging from 30-70% utilization and my throughput via AFP was in the 80-90MB/s range.

sure, ZFS loves RAM!

8 Gb is good for me -> ~80-90MB/s via SMB2 (Win7) Share...

not really.

I agree that for your configuration (4x2TB on RAIDZ1), 8GB is good, but if you only have 4GB , still your can have good troughput, but you need patience and do some tuuning to your box.

1 - First and most important, instal Daoyama ZFSKerntune <- Search Nas4free post to understand how, because at this moment you need to do manually ( perhaps in a near future , this usefull tune app, can be integrated onto Nas4Free core).
2- Adjust ZFSKerntune to 4GB and do several test.

Test allways using the SAME big ISO File, because the size of the files are important.

4 - Test your BOX by SMB & FTP, if FTP is x2 or x1,5 you SMB , you need to tune SMB too.

Find usefull post of HOWTo tune SMB on Nas4Free & old FreeNAS Forum, for me reduce the Bufers from 64K to 32K or 16K works better than defaults ( 64K),
(I test Jumbo Packet, and finally discart it, because troughput is better, but my Box becomes unresponsible, so I need to revert to MTU=1500)

and remember:
tunnings thats works fine for me , perhaps works worse for you.

PD: Nas4Free default tune is for 8GB of RAM so it's normal that works better with 8GB, but you can change default tune to others values. (revision 6766)+OBI on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 12x3TB disk in 3 vdev in RaidZ1 = 32TB Raw size only 22TB usable
