Possible to unencrypt a drive?

#1

Post by twoj » 16 May 2013 04:04

Being in a rush I was quickly encrypting my 5 ata drives, and before I noticed I now encypted my USB key with the embedded nas4free (da0).
I'm not too concerned - I can reflash it and rebuild the whole computer but I was surprised that I don't see anywhere a way to remove the encryption to return the drive to a normal drive without completely wiping the drive, even though I have the passphrase to unencypt the drive.

Would appreciate if anyone knows how to do this to post their results or just to tell me that its not possible.

thanks

because it's not possible, the only way to return to normal disk is to format it ( wipe data), but if remember your key/passPrase, you still can mount your encrypted disk, and once done, copy valuable data to a safe / unencryted place.

PD: remember to have a backup of your valuable data , a raid or ZFS raid, never sustitute a good Backup: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=3855&p=19948#p19889

Thanks raulfg3!

That's what I thought! - I did end up having to reset the configuration and re-flash N4F back onto the USB key and redo the configuration. It wasn't very complicated so not such a big deal.
I agree about the people confuse redundancy with backup, I've been burned a few times in various ways to develop habits to avoid losing data. Incidentally that's how I found zfs, having lost data to corruption!

thanks for the reply!
