Permanent directory for cron-snapshots

#1

Post by seldo » 26 Jul 2018 18:52

Hello

First of all, I am running the embedded version of 11.0.0.4

I have two questions:
- I want to run a scrub through a cron job, should I do this directly from the GUI (System > Advanced > Cron) and it will kept at reboot, or do I need a special location to save the cron job?

- I want to enable a proper snapshot system (most likely this or related -- viewtopic.php?f=70&t=2197 / https://github.com/fritz-hh/scripts_NAS4Free/wiki)
It seems like I have to put the scripts files in a permanent directory. It is advised to have it in one of the pools. However, what about putting that on a small partition of my usb drive? If it is in a pool, do I need to create a special filesystem for it?

Thanks!

MAIN_POOL: 2x2 TB vdev mirror (WD Red/Seagate IronWolf), local BACKUP_POOL: 1x6TB WD Red

As a starting point I recommend to configure a cron script from the GUI, it will persist reboots and to use vanilla XigmaNAS functionality to take regular snapshots.
If the existing functionality does not meet your requirements you can still decide to go for script files.

I will go for the scrub cron as soon as my manual scrub is finished. I will see how it goes and report here.

For the auto-snapshot, I already have it daily, which I think is enough for me.
However, if the GUI was allowing a weekly and monthly frequency, I believe that would be good enough for me.
