Yes, I've restarted, as well as stopped, then started from the extension page. It always comes up green running.

I access plex on my local network at:
http://192.168.1.110:32400/web/index.html#

Plex gets me to sign in as usual, verifies via plex.tv, then returns me to the local address logged in but with no server available

I ran the command in tools/execute command & output was:
$ sockstat -cl -46 -p 32400
USER COMMAND PID FD PROTO LOCAL ADDRESS FOREIGN ADDRESS
plex Plex Media 40505 60 tcp4 *:32400 *:*

Thanks!

Please try and locate udner the Plex Extension install location the following plugins directory: "/mnt/path/to/plexdata/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/Services.bundle"

Then rename "Services.bundle" to "Services.bundle.old" and restart plex and retry if you can access the server again.

Hi, Just tested latest Plex Extension on latest XigmaNAS here with success.

Please reboot the server and re-try/re-install the extension, since Plex extension need to copy some small files to XigmaNAS RAM disk on Embedded platforms such as the plexmediaserver rc, so if this RAM disk is already too low it space it may fail to copy, this was on purpose to minimize permission issues.

Hi,

plexmediaserver does not exist in /etc/rc.d or the local startup

Any other ideas?

Make sure to first remove the failed install bits before re-try, follow the below steps:

1: Go to "System > Advanced > Command Scripts" and delete any "Plex" related PostInit commands(there should be usually one).
2: Go to your OBI install location and delete the "plex" directory and reboot the system.
3: Install Plex Extension using OBI again, after install finish, copy the "Blue Info Box" output information for reference just in case this don't work.

After the reboot it seems to be working, but after I login to the plex page it says after a while that a core component is not working and asks to upload a log file. The lo file inside the plex directory has nothing interesting:
Fri Jan 4 10:31:13 2019: Plex Media Server successfully stopped
Fri Jan 4 10:31:17 2019: Plex Media Server successfully restarted

To make the matters worse, the status of my software raid array turned to degraded.... Apparently because of the crash...

I hate to be the person to tell you that, your SoftRAID/UFS filesystem is corrupting, and please forget about FSCK(don't even try to run it with out backups) and Plex, at this time just back up your "Important" data asap as possible, we can later redu this with a decent filesystem like ZFS.

Good luck and regards.

Hmm, what can be the cause? I mean SMART is not throwing any errors... I have seen errors caused by faulty cables...
Where should I look?

SMART is a Hardware failure reporting feature, and is not even perfect, trust me, I have already a nice amount of funny thing with Seagate, Toshiba among others during my job and is plain sad, and in most cases an unexpected disaster, as those drives all died with no SMART errors.

In regards to UFS filesystem, is because UFS can't automatically heal itself, bitrot start to degrade its consistency overtime and FSCK will not restore/heal this weak data, if RAID5 things can gets even worse due write-holes during sudden system lockups/power failures etc.

Wen I started with NAS4Free, I made some test and I've managed to kill my Software RAID1 just for fun repeatedly, then I tried with ZFS and have no much of a luck, thus only considered ZFS for my data on FreeBSD.

UFS is so weak that after my own customers calling me that their NAS'ses wont booted after power failure, I switched Embedded on them with RootOnZFS, they now just call me wen they need a share settings or adding more HDD's, one of them still running from the same boot environment for few years with no issues, even he treats his NAS like his router/modem with NO UPS in those, that's more than enough to see how resilient is ZFS even from a single disk(copies=2 is another option), this behavior was the same wen I was testing on FreeBSD based Firewall appliances, so OPNsense RootOnZFS was the most solid solution here on my own tests.

Please backup your data asap and don't even try to stay with UFS, we can tune your ZFS storage with as slow as 4GB RAM, if you want to make the jump, after backup your data rebuild the storage as ZFS and copy the data back to pool/dataset, also you can continue using Embedded in USB stick tough if is a home setup, as what's most important here is the user data to be safe as possible.

P.S. gulitza sorry if I sound abit biased or maybe arrogant wen talking about UFS/ZFS, I just get upset wen seeing ppl losing data from UFS because in the other forum they read, use "1GB per TB for ZFS", yet haven't seen any user here losing data from ZFS with even 4GB RAM(properly tuned), I think that statement is misleading many users here unfortunately so they just hire UFS/SoftRaid on the first place.

OK, I will see what I can do, but, as far as I read, you need ECC ram in order to take full advantage of zfs. I actually had a Seagate zfs array, and when those disks died (like 5 years later), I switched to WD greens and Softraid... I will try to backup as much data as I can and get back to you for some pointers for tuning my system up. I am running it embedded on an Asus E35M1-I motherboard with an E-350 dual core cpu and 4 gig of ddr3... I chose this mobo because it has 6 sata 3 ports, it's mini-itx so it fits in my Lian-Li case and is not so power hungry...

ECC RAM is a must have for serious data storage indeed, but for home devices that don't have ECC just don't worry, it just happens that few users at that other forum lost their data due that software in its early releases and related it to non-ECC.

“There’s nothing special about ZFS that requires/encourages the use of ECC RAM more so than any other filesystem.”
https://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic ... #p26303271

But some users wan to trust some random user more than authority regardless.

At the end if someone love their data, will use ECC and have backups, since there is many possibilities for losing data not necessarily related due ECC RAM.

Hey, thanks for bearing with me...
I moved most of the data do a WD MyBookLive NAS, it's not sensitive data or irreplaceable, but...
Now I will destroy the array and create a zfs pool. I have a 3rd spare disk, a Seagate IronWolf, NAS grade hdd. Would there be a benefit installing it as well?
Thanks

Hi gulitza, again sorry for being such arrogant, as I emptied my beer fridge past nights.

Yes you can use any HDD you have for ZFS on your NAS, just make sure you have backups of the important/critical data.

I found service.bundle folder under:
mnt » data » Extensions » plex » plexdata » Plex Media Server » Plug-ins

I copied it to a new folder called services.bundle.old and then deleted services.bundle.

Restarted Plex, but no change.

Rebooted server, no change

And no services.bundle folder has been recreated (not sure if there was meant to be one).

Would anything I've done when changing the thermal paste on the CPU have caused this? Everything else appears to be working just fine.

Thanks

Hi that services.bundle is a old workaround from the Plex forum, and it also worked for me once, changing CPU should not interfere with the data, this is more like something is corrupted in the plex app, besides backup your "plexdata" and reinstall Plex as a last resort, you may want to go to the official Plex forums for some advice.

Hi Jose,
I managed to change my softraid for a zfs pool.... Everything is ok, but I remember now why I changed in the first place. CPU usage is very high with zfs. My dual-core crappy cpu is at more than 80% in a simple copy operation... You were mentioning something about tuning the system.... Any pointers? Thanks

Hi gulitza, the high CPU usage should be negligible, as long as this CPU support 64Bit, which it indeed should for latest XigmaNAS of course, notice that wen transferring all the data back to NAS at once, SAMBA which is unfortunately single threaded application may use higher CPU usage than expected on one of the assigned core.

If you rebuild your SoftRAID to ZFS RAIDZ1 this should remain negligible, but if you used RAIDZ2(double parity) the CPU consumption will increase a little bit due extra parity calculations/checksum, still non an issue for modern 2 core/4 Core CPU's.

However, OTOH I would sacrifice a lil more CPU usage as long as the data is well cared and checksumed, but if you really need this extra CPU cycles you can turn ZFS checksum off and run like an ordinary SoftRAID with will completely defeat the ZFS/self healing purpose abilities/benefits.

At the end I personally prefer to push my CPU alil more(80% is still ok) before thinking to put my data on any legacy filesystem putting my data at risk, but I also understand than some users care much about power consumption, please try to put the XigmasNAS power saving on either "Adaptive" or "High Adaptive" and retest the data copy/reads, lower setting(power saver) my render the CPU usage higher than expected since it might work a lil under clocked.

If you still need to disable checksum to free the extra CPU cycles by trading data security/healing, I will PM you the command to do it, which I highly do not recommend under any circumstances.

I've been using Plex installed via OBI for a long time (local and remote access).
Today after rebooting the NAS, the Plex server can't be found.
Nothing else has been changed with Plex or NAS
I realised something else was at cause when I discovered Transmission wasn't working either (no data up or down)
A very simple fix in the end, nothing to do with Xigmanas. I have routed the NAS to go via VPN client on the router, and that VPN on the router wasn't connected. Restarted the VPN client on the router, and all is good again.

Apologies for waisting your time with this Jose - and many thanks again for your guidance. When I next need to re-install the OS I will follow your advice and do the Root ZFS approach.

Hi

I recently upgraded to ZFS file storage on the current release. I have plex up an running but it shuts down while scanning my libraries.

Hi, this exit on signal 6 and 11 is an old issue some users has been still experiencing with Plex and can be triggered due various reasons from memory to possibly hardware issues wen page faults, personally I haven't had much luck trying to reproduce it, and it seems that there are several fixes for this that also varies per user/harware.

However since you upgrade to ZFS storage I recommend you to try leaving at least 2~4GB solely for the system(by limiting the vfs.zfs.arc_max) if this libraries are too big(in the TB side) since Plex can be a bit rough while scanning those initially, also high Swap usage my render the system unresponsive, but simply tuning the vfs.zfs.arc_max have worked for many here.

As for the Samba errors, I'm not sure but you ca try disabling "ZFS ACL" under Samba related shares if any, as it seems to have solved similar errors/warnings for some users here, between Samba errors/warning may be triggered by a wide range of issues/networking.

Thanks for the reply. I added another drive today and uninstalled plex and OBI extensions and installed it on the new drive (ufs) outside of zfs drive pool.

I had read about the vfs.zfs.arc_max fix so I tried it with the following with 16 Gigs of memory

vfs.zfs.arc_max 12G ZFS maximum ARC size
Should this be fine?

Even with these settings memory used was up to 98%. After Plex stopped scanning and almost no CPU use, it still showed high memory use.

Hi, I believe Plex/Extensions may be installed on any data store regardless of filesystem, any dedicated Extensions ZFS dataset with sane permission should be ok, but if you are running Embedded, it is ok to have those Extensions in its UFS Data partition as long as this is a decent disk(not a slow USB 2.0 disk).

Between the high RAM usage still after Plex scanning, I've personally have also experienced that here while scanning/scraping my libraries initially as well, and I've personally set ARC_MAX to 10GB on my 16GB system(vfs.zfs.arc_min I left default) and RAM usage here is still 83%+, and I also run many services and compile stuff and my disk I/O and Samba transfers always saturate here, but RAM usage is abit higher for certain tasks as expected, so it most likely normal behavior to still use 90%+ with 12GB ARC and scanning big libraries with Plex.

To confirm the vfs.zfs.arc_max setting use:

Code: Select all

# sysctl vfs.zfs.arc_max

I had it going and now it starts for about 2 seconds and then stops. This happened after was adding my large photo library.

I checked the logs and it shows this but does not start.

xigmanas plexinit: script has been started successfully!
Jan 20 17:34:44 xigmanas root: plexmediaserver_plexpass not running? (check /var/run/plex/plex.pid). When I look in that directory there is nothing in it.

Thanks

Hi, you could try starting Plex by CLI with "plexinit -s" or with "plexmediaserver_plexpass onestart" and see whats the output, you could also check the Plex logs located in its data directory and report any strange issue on the official Plex forums for faster response, between reinstalling XigmaNAS/Plex and re-verify the permissions maybe a faster solution.

Thanks again for the reply!

I may have figured it out. "maybe" It looks like when I went to the ZFS from softraid, there were a number of empty folders in my photo directory. I am dong another rsync and see if this fixes it. It seems like Plex chokes on empty folders. Have you heard of this?
