setting lowest cpu speed?

#1

Post by mrjacobrussell » 05 Dec 2016 23:39

I am trying to drop my CPU idle to 600 or 800 mhz
I am running a set of opteron 8216 HE processors on fan-less heatsinks.

I seen this page
https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?powerd

I couldn't get this one to work ( because I don't know what i am doing im sure lol)

and https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/172/

I tried these..

Code: Select all

powerd by default use adaptive mode (thanks to BSDKaffee)

You can also tweak lowest CPU frequency used by CPU by setting this in /etc/sysctl.conf or /boot/loader.conf:
Code:
debug.cpufreq.lowest=600

You can also set it by hand in terminal using sysctl:
Code:
sysctl debug.cpufreq.lowest=600
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just tried lowering it from the RC.conf

Code: Select all

 powerd_flags -a adaptive -b adaptive -n adaptive -M 1800 -m 400
it still wont go lower than 1000 mhz

is it possible my CPU or motherboard wont allow the speed to go lower than 1000 mhz ??

lowering the speed will not give you better power usage.
what these processors do is that if they drop below a certain speed the also lower the voltage.
what you would need is a program where you can also adjust the voltage, but powerd is not one that offers that.

do not use rc.conf, use webGUI. System|Advanced Setup

if your looking at the web gui to determine if your mhz is dropping that could be the reason. that process will increase the cpu usage to a point where you may never see it work.

use a terminal and try something like "sysctl dev.cpu.0.freq" to monitor it's usage.

you may want to limit the Minimum frequency as dropping bellow a certain value may cause issues with some hardware.

personally I don't use it.

I have the server in a closet / gun room behind my closet im my master bedroom. I dont mind it being warm but I want it to idle down as much as possible .

also I'm not sure if it is a limitation of my opterons or my old ass arima nm64x Motherboard but my lowest cpu speed is 1000 on the cpu tuning page.

here is what is shows under "'Maximum frequency"
2400, 2200, 2000, 1800, 1000.
Platform x64-embedded on Dual-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 8216 HE

I'm wondering, I have a matched set of slower Opterons I will give them a try and see if it gives different speeds.

I think whatever powerd sees as the lowest freq is what it can do. I use an old 3.6 GHz P4 that goes to 448MHz, but they're right, it still uses 100w at idle regardless. It doesn't save watts.
