[SOLVED] Moving logs using symbolic link?

#1

Post by Onichan »

So I am planning on doing a full install and just move the /var/logs to a zfs volume to prevent excessive writes to my thumb drive. Is there any issues with doing this? I tested it on a VM and it seemed to work fine. I also plan on not using a swap file as I will have 32GB of RAM. Is there anything else I should do to help keep writes off the usb drive?

It's good decisión not use a swap If You have 8GB or more RAM.

To move logs to Data disk, please read the Wiki.

PD : this is my config, i have 8 GB RAM and do not have swap, and move my logs to /mnt/NAS-a/Logs. I also move DB of minidlna & transmission folders to minimize USB writes.

I did read the Wiki about moving logs and when testing what was provided did move most all of them, but there were a few log files that it didn't move. That is why I was planning on just doing a symbolic link as that guarentees all current and future logs are kept off the usb drive. I just wanted to make sure it won't negatively effect anything.

From my experience, these logs don't moved by the Wiki method:

fuppes_logfile
rsync_client_logfile
rsync_local_logfile

Because there are special strings in rf.conf for these strings. So, it needs to change there logs path manually.
