Anti Virus for Windows?

#1

Post by kenZ71 » 13 Oct 2013 14:20

So I'm getting tired of all the prompts and whining from my current Anti Virus app - AVG. Any reliable open source AV apps for my windows boxes ?

I could buy something but they always seem to try to resell something more. I just want it to do its thing and not bother me, much like my awesome NAS :)

Microsoft? Hmm, surprised their product has a good reputation.

Not on the machine I am writing from... ;)
I do however use Windows on my gaming computer, as there is not much choice there, if you want to play the latest titles, unless you go with a console, bleh.
By the way I use it with ESET as an antivirus...
Watercooling is just the beginning ;)

I agree with the speakers that the antivirus from Microsoft is quite good. But unfortunately there's no automatic update(

Hi, sorry for the late response, but you may try the official Command line tool for Windows Defender, ideal for sysadmins, just write your own batch and run from a scheduled task for convenience.

Find on the newsgroeps System center, no key neccasary, in there is a client version 32.64 bit like defender the onlly thing you need to install it with the commandline!!! ga naar de dir en voer uit "SCEPinstall /disableoslimit"

After that its automaticly updated. Works on 7, 8, 8.1, 2012, 2012R2

In reply to your first post kenZ71, I can recommend panda for your windows machines. Just have to configure the settings once installed and it won't bother you until it detects something. It'll prompt for an account when entering the Settings but I always dismiss it, no problems, I rarely go in there.

You'll want to turn on Gaming/multimedia mode, turn off Panda news, turn on USB Protection and set to automatically vaccinate while turning off Suggest scanning every USB drive inserted into the PC. It'll do the rest once setup like so and won't bother you with yearly renewals like avast does.

P.S. Vaccination just creates an autorun.inf file which is blank and can't be messed with. Stops the spread of USB borne viruses.
HP Microserver N54L Modded Bios 041 * LSISAS2008 P20 IT mode - Dual Port GbE Broadcom NetXtreme LAGG
ICY BOX Back Plane for 4x 2.5" SSD's ZIL L2ARC - Installed NAS4FREE on first SSD of expander for reliability. No USB
Embedded 10.3.0.3.3379 - Configured as Samba AD DC with Roaming Profiles including mapped home directories.
Happily sitting on an Eaton 5110 UPS - Not upgrading firmware anytime soon as 11 was unstable with SAS driver.

Hah, old post.

I still don't have anti virus on my NAS. I set all files to the lowest possible permissions. That means audio/ video is read only for all.

Office type files are in their own directory with read / write. When accessed the client machine runs scanning.

Seems to work for me.

Well if it is about what is safe consider what you use the machine for.
I have had Windows machines in the local network beside Linux based(Debian,Ubuntu).
I have not got a virus since kaaza was the number 1(p2p).
I use clamav,ips/ids,content filter(e2guardian)privoxy(ads) and use opendns too as my DNS.

There is no safe OS because somebody is smarter then you, if they want to get insidse your local network i belive nobody can stop them.
It is in the human nature to make mistakes.

Couldn't agree more with you on this. It is always concerning that someone is out there to prey on you.
