Possible to move Time Machine disk to NAS4free and continue?

#1

Post by PartisanEntity »

Hi there,

Currently I have an external USB HDD connected to my iMac which I use for Time Machine backups.

Would it be possible to connect this USB HDD to my NAS4free powered server, copy the TM disk to the server and continue making backups to it from the iMac over AFP?

Thanks very much.

Doubtful. What file format does the TM use?
11.2-RELEASE-p3 | ZFS Mirror - 2 x 8TB WD Red | 28GB ECC Ram
HP ML10v2 x64-embedded on Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4150 CPU @ 3.50GHz

Extra memory so I can host a couple VMs
1) Unifi Controller on Ubuntu
2) Librenms on Ubuntu

Don't all TM disks use HFS+? At least that is the format of this external USB disk.

Please google a bit to be sure.

if really use HFS+ , the answer is NO, you can't use your TimeMachine Disk in Nas4Free.

BSD only support a reduced number of Filesystem, see FAQ18: http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=faq:0018
12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7743) on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 11x3TB disk in 1 vdev = Vpool = 32TB Raw size , so 29TB usable size (I Have other NAS as Backup)

Disclaimer: I didn't try this at all, it may burn your house including all cats…

You may create a time machine sparse bundle on you network share. Search the web on how to create such a sparse bundle.
When done just copy over the data from you USB drive which is essentially the Backups.backupdb folder.

Tell time machine where to find the new disk and you should be done with it.

Here you find a more elaborate Howto:
