My "little" Storage

#1

Post by DJproject » 28 Mar 2015 13:17

Hello guys,

Here my "little" storage with NAS4Free, 41TB (21 HDD's), OpenSearchServer (OSS) and Subsonic:
  • Mainboard: ASUS P5Q-E
  • CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q9450
  • Memory: Kingston 4x 4GB (16GB)
  • HDD's:
    4x WDC WD40EFRX-68WT0N0 (16TB)
    4x WD20EARX-00PASB0 (8TB)
    4x SAMSUNG HD203WI (8TB)
    4x SAMSUNG HD103SJ (4TB)
    5x ST31000340NS (5TB)
all configured with ZFS except the bootdrive
  • VGA: Hercules PCI (old)
  • LAN: 2x Onboard Marvell 80E8056/80E8001 (one used), 1x Intel Dual-GBit
  • Case: Chieftec CA-01B-B-SL
  • Backplane: 2x IcyDock 5 x 8,9 cm SATAI - III in 3 x 5,25 " MB155SP - B sw
  • Power supply: NZXT Hale Power 90+ V2 New Edition Modular Netzteil 850W
This storage has many useful tasks:
  • Backup all my VM's from two ESXi-Servers with scripts started by cron-jobs
  • Common NFS-Storage for two ESXi-Servers (both ESXi have also there own storage, it's only for moving VM's from one ESXi to the other without shutting down the VM's)
  • CIFS/SMB for everything: e. g. Mediaplayers (two Raspberry PI with OpenELEC on two TV's) and everything else, which is not necessary to backup
  • Webserver for the backup logs
  • RSync: for syncing files over the internet
  • Jail 1: OpenSearchServer (OSS): to find everything on the NAS
  • Jail 2: Subsonic: to listen music
If my "little" storage is interesting you, feel free to ask!

I will also thank you for this wonderful software, it's great in many ways!!!!

10 in the two IcyDock's in the 6 external 5.25" drive bays
8 in the 8 internal 3.5" drive bays
2 in the external 3.5" drive bays
1 vertical behind the power supply (not original - with a little work by myself)

Nice setup, but
all configured with ZFS except the bootdrive
I would recommend using a board which supports ECC RAM, it would be a pity if 41 TB of storage get lost because of a RAM failure.

You are right, BUT:

I don't use ZFS for its data security, I use ZFS because of its simplicity for handling big storage! That sounds strange, but it is so. Everything on this NAS is recoverable and is not so important. Call it Backup-Storage and fun-machine! The risk that two ESXi and the NAS will be defective at the same time, is very low. And the important data are lying on the ESXI, and there I have two, both are installed with hardware RAID10, and so on...

But that is not that I do not trust NAS4FREE, but for me the handling of important data is easier with VM's.

And it's relative cheap..,
