Full install XigmaNAS-x64-LiveCD-11.2.0.4.6400.iso

#1

Post by Alice » 15 Feb 2019 17:06

I am trying to install XigmaNAS from LiveCD (XigmaNAS-x64-LiveCD-11.2.0.4.6400.iso)
from NAS4Free version 11.1.0.4 (5403).
The laptop boots OK from the CD, although it takes a long time, then it gets to a screen showing me several
options such as boot Xigmanas safe mode etc. But I can't read it all because it immediately goes to
a blank screen. I can't do anything.
I tried two LiveCDs with the same result.
Can you help?

Hi, you need to provide further information in order to get help, even more since few Laptops devices are very picky.

Please provide Laptop Model and Specs at least.

I just get the option for 1. Boot into normal mode, 2. Boot into safe mode etc - there is nothing
about upgrade/install - and the screen goes blank very quickly.

Hi, I haven't found useful info on that legacy laptop besides known ACPI problems on such model, but dated back to 2007/2008.

Since many Laptop hardware are very picky in regards for booting, notoriously ACPI, Video, Network etc., is very hard to give correct answer/solution, and most likely will requires for custom kernel build tests optimized for such hardware.

P.S You may want to hit quickly the Safe Mode Option before the screen goes blank, but if don't work then better wait for a user with similar model to chime it with solution, alternatively you may want to try a legacy N4F 9.x/10.x release.

Thank you very much. The question is: do I have to use XigmaNAS or can I safely stay with N4F? The laptop is
on N4F 11.1.04 - version 5403. This works fine - I thought that the recommendation is to upgrade to XigmaNAS?

The recommendation is definitely to upgrade whenever possible to latest, to get latest security patches and bug fixes but not always possible due legacy hardware limitations vs advancements/improvements.

However, since it is working with N4F 11.1, what comes into mind is the console driver since it was changed on later release, if this is the case as a workaround, setting the kern.vty to "sc"(kern.vty="sc") during loader prompt may work.

Wen the Boot Loader appears, try to quick Hit Option#3(Loader Prompt) and set the console to sc and boot like shown on screen below:
VirtualBox_NAS4Free 11.png
if the system booted correctly, then the issue was the VT console driver, to confirm you are on SC console, type "sysctl kern.vty".

Install normally and after reboot perform the same previous steep in Loader Prompt, after boot success, set the kern.vty="sc" on the /boot/loader.conf, alternatively, after install completion, you can re-mount the partition and perform the change manually on the fly.

I managed it - had to hit option 5, not 3 on my screen for Loader prompt.
I got to the screen with option for Intall/Upgrade option (.
Options 1-5 disabled because LiveCD requires 2GB memory? Can I continue
with full install like this?

Many thanks for your wonderful help.

How much RAM does that system have?, 2GB is the bare minimum for Full installs, though you can continue with the installer and use the legacy Full on UFS.

For RootOnZFS supporting WebGUI upgrades, after install we can I can help you tune the ZFS_ARC for you, so you will be able to make further upgrades from WebGUI like Embedded with out the hassle about setting the console driver again.

After login to WebGUI you can set the kern.vty console to SC for backward compatibility with your system.

I had to give up on this particular model - it gave me too much trouble. I installed xigmanas
on a later model and succeeded.
Many thanks for your help - and I'll be in touch if I run into yet another problem.
