Hello JoseMR, I need your help.

I do a new ZFSonRoot install on my server, and then I restore my config file, all works as expected , excep plex, The installed plex is in his ooriginal path: /mnt/RPool/DATA/plex/plexinit

but when I try to execute, this error appears:

Code: Select all

pnas: ~# /mnt/RPool/DATA/plex/plexinit
Initializing Plex Media Server...
plexmediaserver does not exist in /etc/rc.d or the local startup
directories (/usr/local/etc/rc.d), or is not executable
/mnt/RPool/DATA/plex/plexinit: /usr/local/etc/rc.d/plexmediaserver: not found
Il do a force reinstall from OnebuttonInstaller, but something fails.

@@@ INTEL GPU OFFLOAD NOTES @@@

If you have a supported Intel GPU, you can leverage hardware
accelerated encoding/decoding in Plex Media Server on FreeBSD 12.0+.

The requirements are as follows:

* Install multimedia/drm-kmod: e.g., pkg install drm-fbsd12.0-kmod

* Enable loading of kernel module on boot: sysrc kld_list+="i915kms"
** If Plex will run in a jail, you must load the module outside the jail!

* Load the kernel module now (although reboot is advised): kldload i915kms

* Add plex user to the video group: pw groupmod -n video -m plex

* For jails, make a devfs ruleset to expose /dev/dri/* devices.

e.g., /dev/devfs.rules on the host:

[plex_drm=10]
add include $devfsrules_hide_all
add include $devfsrules_unhide_basic
add include $devfsrules_unhide_login
add include $devfsrules_jail
add path 'dri*' unhide
add path 'dri/*' unhide
add path 'drm*' unhide
add path 'drm/*' unhide

* Enable the devfs ruleset for your jail. e.g., devfs_ruleset=10 in your
/etc/jail.conf or for iocage, iocage set devfs_ruleset="10"

Please refer to documentation for all other FreeBSD jail management
utilities.

* Make sure hardware transcoding is enabled in the server settings

@@@ INTEL GPU OFFLOAD NOTES @@@
pnas: plex# pkg install plexmediaserver

now plex start normally.

When you enter the Maintance section in GUI, look a bit deeper and forget about the way plex was installed before.
Jose has mention this in this thread before, you are not the only one.
There is options to install by tar.ball or by pkg install.

Hi raulfg3, as lindsay denoted, the Plex Extension no longer installs the Plex Media Server Component by default, the OBI installer will only fetch the extension files and set the Plex channel regarding the user choice, same as executing `plexinit` on new manual installs, note that -a hidden option will enable the alternate plexpass channel in manual installs i.e. `plexinit -a`.

This way the user have the option to get/install the very latest official Plex tarball initially, or to install it by the official FreeBSD repos, the later may lag on updates as expected, also note thet the user still have the option to upgrade from an official Plex tarball later on as well.

Is it possible to use ram as Transcoder temporary directory in Plex?

Hi lindsay, I think you have two options to accomplish this task easily by using the FreeBSD built-in tools like `mdmfs` which creates and formats an UFS filesystem on the fly, or by using the common in memory filesystem TMPFS, here below are some examples to create them.

Note: This assumes Embedded install.

Using `mdmfs` command:

Code: Select all

mkdir -p /tmp/plextmp && mdmfs -s 10G md99 /tmp/plextmp
To properly unmount and detach the md99 execute:

Code: Select all

umount /tmp/plextmp && mdconfig -du md99
-----------------------------------

Mounting a TMPFS filesystem with limitless size:

Code: Select all

mkdir -p /tmp/plextmp && mount -t tmpfs tmpfs /tmp/plextmp
Mounting a TMPFS filesystem with limited size:

Code: Select all

mkdir -p /tmp/plextmp && mount -t tmpfs -o size=10G tmpfs /tmp/plextmp
To unmount the TMPFS simply execute:

Code: Select all

umount /tmp/plextmp
Where "/tmp/plextmp" is the directory I want for Plex to use for temporary stuff.
Where "10G" is the maximum size I want this memory disk to use.
Where "md99" is the number I explicitly set for this md disk to use.

Both start empty initially, i.e. it does not eat your RAM, even if you set a size bigger than the system RAM in case of an md, however you will never want to do that, so it is wise to create an md with a sane size based on the available system resources.

OTOH, Plex Extension sets "${plexmediaserver_support_path}" to use the same directory to keep the metadata safe and persistent and that is the directory Plex should use for transcode, but it may be possible to change this behavior in the Plex conf page and set the temporary directory, in this example "/tmp/plextmp" to let Plex transcode there, however I have to admit that I've never do this before.

Note that Embedded users need to run the whole creation command at Postinit, and Full users can skip the `mkdir` part once directory created, also my own preference would be the TMPFS in this case.

Hi, I did watched the video, good Plex tips in that channel indeed.

The aforementioned MD/TMPFS suggestions still apply for either Plex and Emby or any other app needed for fast media transcoding, just make sure the "Transcoder temporary directory" in the plex app match the directory you've selected for the MD/TMPFS to be mounted.

Be aware that media transcoding can fill up the memory very fast and a "Blu-ray" can take a ton of space, since transcoder files are not flushed instantly until movie finished but when stream connections closes, this may cause the system to just crash/die due out-of-memory, so in that case limiting the size for the memory disks will be a good idea, I will add a third option in the previous post on how to limit the size for the faster TMPFS.

open a shell and type : pkg install plexmediaserver

like you see in my post.

You can do the same from webGUI, but shell is better to see the response. if you can try , is in: Tools > Execute Command

simply enter the command and push execute button.

Hi, after installing the Plex Extension with OBI, all you need is to select your Plex installation method from either PKG or from Tarball and click the regarding button under [Extensions > Plex Media Server > Maintenance]:
Plex-Ext-Installer-Options.png

Regarding the "After rebooting of XigmaNAS, Plex does not start."

This is a known bug and seems to happens on initial install, seems the user need to check twice the Enable box then click the Save button in order for the page to write `PLEX_ENABLE=YES` to the extension config file.

Hi, the thrid option was posted above as to just make TMPFS mount with limited space, like the following:

Code: Select all

mkdir -p /tmp/plextmp && mount -t tmpfs -o size=10G tmpfs /tmp/plextmp
Where I denoted it to be size=10G.

Be aware that limiting a memory-disk size and Plex is transcodign a very large file, Plex transcode will fail upon no more memory-disk space left as expected, but that is much better that getting the system unresponsive/locked out.

I think this idea of RAM transcoding is more for users with servers with system resources to spare i.e. a server with said 64 or even more RAM to spare, personally I would leave the RAM for ZFS ARC and use an SSD instead for a relatively busy media server.

The cheaper solution for users don't wanting to transcode in the same disk array Plex resides, or just want faster transcode is to tell Plex to use an spare SSD location, users who installed XigmaNAS in an SSD, either Embedded or Full, can use it for Plex transcode too, in case of Embedded, there is a "Data" partition that can be mounted for this, in case of Full RootOnZFS, the user can simply point Plex to just use the "/tmp" or customize accordingly.

I've previously reported (under a different account, since this forum's password recovery page is broken) having an issue with the Plex server not automatically starting, still able to be manually started with plexinit -s, but even once running still showing "stopped" status in the web GUI.

Sadly things have gotten a little worse -- it's no longer able to start with plexinit -s. There's no errors reported, it just doesn't start.

The latest weirdness is after trying to upgrade the extension (and ticking the checkbox to upgrade plex as well), I'm getting this:

Code: Select all

Plex Media Server package it not installed.
Updating FreeBSD repository catalogue...

I'm running XigmaNAS 11.2.0.4 with Plex extension 4.3.021 and plexmediaserver-1.18.0.1944, at least according to the page. Any ideas how to recover from this state?

Curiouser and curiouser. When I originally received that error, I tried the tarball install, which failed with a different error, then tried the pkg install again several times, then posted here.

I just tried the tarball install again and this time it installed and is now running, though I haven't yet tried rebooting to see if it will auto-start or not.

Hi, unfortunately I no longer test on EOL products and further testing/development is made on XigmaNAS 11.3/12.1.

As for why the extension is telling that Plex package is not installed can be caused by several reasons, but a common ones is that the user changed the extension path and/or the symlinks where missing or not created at all due permissions issues, missing config link located at '"/var/etc/plexconf" etc.

Also be aware that an Initial Tarball Install will further requires a Tarball for upgrades(this is the new recommended installation method), while an Installation with FreeBSD pkg can later be overrides by a Tarball if the user want to stay with official latest Plex releases, but the extension can also overrides a Tarball if the user selects the checkbox to upgrade from pkg since the initial setup selected was to use pkg, or pkg was remains since older extension version as expected.

You can definitely try to reboot the server and check if Plex automatically restarts, and if Plex not started after reboot, we can have a quick look, even tough I no longer test on said products as previously denoted.

Hi,

I am trying the TARBALL method but it says:

Invalid Plex Media Server tarball archive.

I am using the FREEBSD version here: https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/

Also tried the PKG, and got this error:
$ pkg install plexmediaserver
Updating FreeBSD repository catalogue...
Fetching meta.txz: . done
repository FreeBSD has no meta file, using default settings
Fetching packagesite.txz: .......... done
Unable to open created repository FreeBSD
Unable to update repository FreeBSD
Error updating repositories!

What I am doing wrong?

Forgot to mention I am using version 11.2.0.4 - Omnius (revision 5774)

You are running an End Of Life(EOL), and I no longer test/develop on such removed/deprecated products, sorry about that.

If an XigmaNAS upgrade is not possible for any reason, what I will suggest is to install/upgrade to the latest Extension version 4.3.021 and retry the official latest Plex Media Server FreeBSD Tarball(recommended).

As for "Unable to open created repository FreeBSD" it seems that select FreeBSD users has been experiencing that error, there is more information about it HERE

Thank you very much for your help. Upgraded to Xigmanas 11.3, everything is working again. Thanks.

Hello,

I couldn't update with tar.bz2.

Finally I have upgraded from cli with pkg upgrade plexmediaserver to version 1.19.3.2843.

My extension was already updated to 4.3.021.

Now Plex suggests that there is a newer version 1.19.3.2852, but by cli indicates that there is no more upgrades. And tar.bz2 from plem repository fails over webgui

Hi Jose, I am a long time user of your Extension but I recently did a new build and am trying to install fresh and I am having the hardest time getting it to run right now. Used to work awesome.

I cannot find the old threads about the rc.conf modifications and the Command Scripts. It doesn't appear that the Extension adds those things automatically. Can you point me to that information so I can make sure I have it all right?

I put plexmediaserver_plexpass_enable YES in the rc.conf settings from the XigmaNAS Gui but it just keeps getting overwritten to NO on reboot. I am not sure what is going on but I am probably missing something.

Running 12.1.0.4 - Ingva (revision 7542) and app version 4.3.021.

Thanks

Hi, please provide the XigmaNAS product version/revision and the exact output of the error upon an official Plex TarBall being uploaded through the ext. webgui, hopefully I can have a look around during this weekend and test as time permits.

However, seems it is functional here:

Hi, on latest Plex Extension, the script no longer automatically install the Plex component, it is an user choice between using pkg tool(lagg on updates) or uploading a latest Plex TarBall(latest/up to date) from the official Plex/FreeBSD download page.

Also, the extension will always set plexmediaserver_enable="NO" and it will later be started by the script as "service service_name onestart", this is to prevent this service from being started automatically and to obey the built-in extension plex_config file which holds additional parameters related to the extension as well, no user manual parameters setup are actually required.

If there is an error after a TarBall upload or by using pkg tool, please check the extension/path permissions first, otherwise please post the related errors here to have a look around.
