user and group permissions not working as expected

Post by kenZ71 »

I might be a bit to Obsessive Compulsive but I like to have user and group level permissions this way I can give kids read access to stuff like music & movies while they can read / write their own stuff.

Likewise - I like to have folders where only I and the Mrs can edit such as family photos, documents, etc.

So the issue:

text file named VirtualBox.txt with config notes for VirtualBox was created by the Mrs then I attempted to update using my own login - ken but received a permission denied.

Huh, thats odd... OK, save as VirtualBox2.txt - file shows up with same group owner with rw for both user & group so why did this give me trouble?

Shared out via Samba

Code: Select all

nas4free: Home_Lan# ls -ltr Vir*
-rwxrwx--- 1 Mrs admin 252 Sep 4 17:49 VirtualBox.txt
-rwxrw---- 1 ken admin 252 Sep 4 18:28 VirtualBox2.txt
nas4free: Home_Lan#
