SSD as a storage drive

#1

Post by chachi420 » 11 Mar 2019 05:06

Hello,
I just got Kingston A400 120GB SSD and wanted to use it in storage. It will not be a main backup or anything. I plan on using it to store some songs mainly. I wanted to ask a few things regarding this matter:

1. Is it ideal to use SSDs with Xigmanas?
2. If yes, which format should I use? (UFS, ZFS, FAT32?)
3. Do I need to activate any special things before using the SSD?

Thank you for your help everyone.

1. Is it ideal to use SSDs with Xigmanas? Not for home use, because in home size is more important than speed ( rotating disk can saturate your NIC up 100MB/sec) so use SSD is only recommended for boot device ( and in my case I use an old SSD 60GB in size that can't use on my desktopPC because is it to small today)

2. If yes, which format should I use? (UFS, ZFS, FAT32?) To store data; any , I personally use ZFS , because I copy Video files with higer sizes that FAT32 do not support (FAT32 file size limit is 4GB)

3. Do I need to activate any special things before using the SSD? NO, you can use it like other HD on your NAS
12.0.0.4 - BETA (revision 6412)+OBI on SUPERMICRO X8SIL-F 8GB of ECC RAM, 12x3TB disk in 3 vdev in RaidZ1 = 32TB Raw size only 22TB usable

Thank you so much for the answer raulfg3.
I am using it not necessarily for a solid backup but just a temporary backup. I have syncthing setup from that SSD to my phone and then once a week i manually back it up from the SSD to my main backup.
Also, I have formatted it as UFS. Should be fine right? Cause you gave me explanation between FAT32 vs ZFS but not UFS so want to make sure.
Thank you again for your help! :]
