Adding drives with Serial ATA 2 Port PCI Card

#1

Post by speedracerx0509 » 12 Mar 2019 18:00

Has anyone done this? Are there specific steps to follow for installation?

Yes, no special steps, only add disk and check that are recognized.

Some chipset are not supported.

Any issues with ada's getting mixed up in the vdev's after new disk is added? Had that happen on an earlier version of nas4free where I had to manually go into the config file and fix it. Not tough, but just scary. :/

So I was messing around with adding 2 more disc's to my current 6. Somehow I wiped out my mirror-2 with ada4 and ada5. The vdev is still there but the mirror is gone. How do I fix this without losing all my data? Basically I need to put ada4 and ada5 back in mirror-2. I have no idea how to do that. Restoring config did not work.

adding drives to a system is way different than adding drives to an existing raid
the experts may have the answers, I've added drives to a system as a separate mirror/pool
adding drives to a mirror or v-devs to a pool possibly, never would I attempt the other
look for the mix-up in the "drives" listing some times I have needed to just open and re-save the drive at issue
by using this free advise, you, your heirs, etc
absolve, save, and hold harmless the advisor.

I've removed the 7th and 8th drive that I was testing. I just need to restore to the original 6 drives, 3 vdevs / 3 mirrors. What is weird is that the above config is correct when checking the xml file, but the pool information only shows mirror-0 (ada0, ada1) and mirror-1 (ada2,ada3) with ada5 hanging out there in the pool by itself. There has got to be a way to put ada4 and ada5 back in the pool as vdev3/mirror-2

A bit more information.
Disks > ZFS > Configuration > Current shows the below which is what I want.
Virtual Devices (3)
Name Type Pool Devices
vdev1 mirror NASpool /dev/ada0,/dev/ada1
vdev2 mirror NASpool /dev/ada2,/dev/ada3
vdev3 mirror NASpool /dev/ada4,/dev/ada5

Disks > ZFS > Configuration > Detected shows the below what I don't want. Which one is the right one? How do I fix? Is that what Synchronize is for? Thanks!
Virtual Devices (3)

NASpool_mirror_0 mirror NASpool /dev/ada0,/dev/ada1
NASpool_mirror_1 mirror NASpool /dev/ada2,/dev/ada3

Ok, in Disks > Management > HDD Management mark the check "Clear configuration information before importing disk" and them push the button import.

Once done do a new screen capture and compare with old to see if some disk is dissapear or changed (I suspect that ada4 must dissapear).

The screen capture that you send indicate that ada4 is not correctly detected , if this is the real problem, you need to shutdown the NAS , recheck the cables and power sata conectors, to ensure that ada4 is correctly detected on new start

Once detected, you need to go to Disks > Management > HDD Management mark the check "Clear configuration information before importing disk" and them push the button import.

and this time your pool must appear and must be in good state, if still not, send new screen captures.

ok, your mirror-2 is broke.

Sorry I do not know how to resolve.

If your have a backup of data on disk , you can try to create a new mirror and then atach to your pool, but this destroy possible data on disk ada5,.

Sorry not enough experience to resolve your case.

How will I know what data was on ada4 and ada5 if I try and create a new mirror?

The only thing you need to do is to add ada4 as a mirror of ada5.

Disks > ZFS > Pools > Tools > Attach a Data Device > Select your pool, select ada5 from pool devices, select ada4 from data devices.

It worked!! Thank you so much was-armandh, raulfg3 and ms4943

So when I was originally trying to add two more drives to the system and ultimately to the pool, HDD management listed ada6 and ada7 as the same drives as ada4 and ada5. Same TB and same serial numbers even though ada6 and 7 are 4TB and ada 4 and 5 are 10TB. Seemed strange. That's when I prob messed up the mirror clicking stuff I should not have.

Update - I erased the 2 4TB drives on a different pc. I had to add them hot as connecting them with nas off and importing disc messed up the ada's and the vdev's in the pool. I now have ada6 and ada7 in a mirror vdev. What does the p1 mean in the device name ada6p1 and ada7p1

p1 mean partition, you add a disk partition not entire disk

So I tried reformatting the two new drives to no avail. I ended up removing them and restoring config back to the original 6 drives/3vdev's but now my pool has vanished. Is this fixable or do I have to start all over?

from CLI try zpool import, and post message

perhaps need to force import.

If work, you need to sync webGUI and real world.

PD: never is a good idea to remove a disk of a pool, hopefully you have lucky , otherwise, you perhaps lose your pool.

Tried that. I lost the pool. Rebuilding it now. Good news is that I learned a lot from you guys! Also good news is that I always have my data backed up.
