Rebuilding Raid5 takes ages

#1

Post by tulamidan » 12 Aug 2019 21:37

Heya

I am running a Freenas 0.7.1 and the system was sitting in my garage for a few years. Now I'd like to reactivate the system and started the server up again.
The Raid 5 is currently rebuilding and it takes ages. I was wondering if there is a way to speed things up?

Here is a recent dmesg output:

Code: Select all

GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.14% p:19 ETA:27082min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.16% p:16 ETA:27067min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.17% p:10 ETA:27093min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.19% p:17 ETA:27069min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.20% p:12 ETA:27072min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.22% p:15 ETA:27046min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.23% p:8 ETA:27053min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.25% p:19 ETA:27055min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.26% p:19 ETA:27060min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.28% p:8 ETA:27038min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.29% p:18 ETA:27047min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.31% p:25 ETA:27024min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.32% p:21 ETA:27008min (cause: store verify progress).
GEOM_RAID5: raid: ad4(2): re-sync in progress: 19.34% p:9 ETA:27039min (cause: store verify progress).
i.e. about 3 weeks.

My RAID configuration:

Code: Select all

Geom name: raid
State: REBUILDING CALM
Status: Total=3, Online=3
Type: AUTOMATIC
Pending: (wqp 0 // 0) 393052422144..393052684288/262144a
Stripesize: 131072
MemUse: 262144 (msl 2)
Newest: 2
ID: 2065418888
Providers:
1. Name: raid5/raid
   Mediasize: 2000409591808 (1.8T)
   Sectorsize: 512
   Mode: r1w1e2
Consumers:

   Sectorsize: 512
   Mode: r2w2e3
   DiskNo: 1
   Error: No
2. Name: ad12
   Mediasize: 1000204886016 (932G)
   Sectorsize: 512

3. Name: ad4
   Mediasize: 1000204886016 (932G)
   Sectorsize: 512
   Mode: r2w2e3
   Synchronized: 196526211072 / 19% (p:181)
   DiskNo: 2
   Error: No

The system is not the speediest:

Code: Select all

i386-embedded on Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU 330 @ 1.60GHz
But three weeks sounds a bit too much for 1,8 TB (1,5 used)

There's not much you can do to push the rebuild.
You can try to set some tunables like

Code: Select all

sysctl kern.geom.raid5.veri_nice=1
the default of the above tunable is 100 and stands for "wait this many milli seconds after last user-read (less than 1sec)".

Code: Select all

sysctl kern.geom.raid5.veri_fac=1000
the default value of the tunable is 25 and stands for "veri brake factor in case of veri_min * X < veri_max".

Cheers,
I have the feeling that it made a small improvement. The ETA keeps changing but I think it is a day less at the moment.
