Fresh install... Sort of.

#1

Post by txtwincam » 13 Jan 2020 20:00

I have an existing 11.0.0.4 install that I want to upgrade the MB, CPU, Mem, ect... basically all but the HDD and case. I wasn't sure if the best path here is to install fresh on a new USB stick (embedded) and import the config, or to install fresh and reconfigure from scratch and restore the data from tape. I'm configured as RAIDZ1 over (13) 2TB disks in JBOD mode thru the megaraid controller (for SMART monitoring). Ideally, Id like to import the array into a fresh install, but not sure how to accomplish this. the array is at 85% capacity so its a lot of data to restore from tape.

Any clues?

best path is to do a fresh install and import your pool ( no data lost).

steps are:
1 - save your actual config file ( non encrypted).
2 - do some screen captures for precaution of your services.
3 - do a fresh install on a new boot medim ( so if something goes wrong, you can allways revert to your actual boot disk).
3.5 consider this time do a fresh ZFSonRoot install ( please read about benefits=viewtopic.php?f=15&t=13650#p84568 )
4 - boot new fresh install and recover your previosly saved config.
5 - revise that all works as expected ( perhaps need to "clear cofig & import disk or sync ZFS webUI with realworld or configure some service.

Thanks, Should I export the pool out of 11.0.0.4 before the install? Or just import it after?

Thanks for the guidance. I will follow the path presented once the next version is released.

One more thought/question. My install is embedded on a 16GB USB 2.0 stick. Would ZFSonRoot have any benefit for me?
