Version 11 vs 12

#1

Post by Bobby072 »

I don't see a side by side comparison of any of the versions. Like 10 vs 11 vs 12 etc.

Im thinking of updating all my old NAS boxes (5 of them) all have 8 gigs but one (has 4) all have x64 intel cpus. I only do simple mirror ZFS no parity drives etc.

I'm testing version 12.x (latest) and so far seems ok.
Is there any good reason why I should bother with version 11? Is there anything it does better at the moment?

Also I want my old x64 version 10.3 back (i've lost my copy) bash me if you like but I collect old software way back to Atari days. I may never use it will never ask for help here about it. Just seems strange that ALL copies have been hunted down and taken offline. Anyone have a copy on google drive or something? Yes i know (we dont support it) I still want it. :)

I'm not myself aware of a side by side comparison, but you could one by comparing both readme files as a start.
Personal observation between 11.3 and 12.X: I've seen posts of people running into trouble with VirtualBox in 12 that doesn't seem to appear in 11.3. For me and I stress this is personal opinion, I normally run my server not on the latest version but the one before for what is stability. I see it as being developed and maintained for longer. It serves my needs since I don't need the latest versions for running a NAS.
Main: Xigmanas 11.2.0.4 x64-full-RootOnZFS as ESXi VM with 24GB memory.
Main Host: Supermicro X8DT3 Memory: 72GB ECC; 2 Xeon E5645 CPUs; Storage: (HBA) - LSI SAS 9211-4i with 3 SATA x 1 TB in raidZ1, 1 x 3 TB SAS drive as single stripe, 3 x 4 TB SAS drives in raidZ1.
Spare1: HP DL360 G7; 6 GB ECC RAM; 1 Xeon CPU; 5 x 500 GB disks on H210i
Backup1: HP DL380 G7; 24 GB ECC RAM; 2 Xeon E5645 CPUs; 8 x 500 GB disks on IBM M1015 flashed to LSI9211-IT

Just to add to what cookiemonster already said, comparison is as simple as: older version = older software, newer version = newer software, also existing security holes, bugs etc. are addressed on any newer product versions.

NAS4Free/XigmaNAS NAS core functionality remains just the same, though some time newer features are added/removed, for example as of 11.x(IIRC) the MariaDB(MySQL) service was added, the new/advanced RootOnZFS Full platform, along with few OS underlying changes.

Good luck finding such buggy and unsafe EOL(End of Life) releases.

*Since the Linux Tracker lack the NAS4Free(EOL) 10.3 x64, and just for recovery purposes, when back home(11AM AST), I will provide the last ISO of that unsupported version, if someone is kind enough can seed/share it on Linux Tracker, link will last 24H after upload before I cleanup my gDrive completely.

Here is the unsafe and unsupported NAS4Free x64 LiveCD 10.3.0.3.4374 ISO/CHEKSUM files, this is temporarily shared for the ease of old zpool/geom RAID recovery purposes only, see post #3*

Again the above link/files will be removed after 24 hours for gDrive cleanup.

Thanks for the DL. Appreciate it. Yes it may have more security holes and intend to patch but need a fall back just in case. I am thankful all copies have not be destroyed.
