Thinking about migrating from freenas 9.2.1.7

Hi, this is my first post on this forum and im a bit of a noob when it comes to bsd but I have managed to run a freenas server for the past 2 years. I found it difficult to install and get working properly but was determined because I have read about how the ZFS file system is great for keeping your data safe. I mainly use my server for storing pictures and media. the pics are archival but the media is accessed frequently, for streaming to my minix. I currently run a zfs raid1 array of two WD red 2tb discs and i am booting off of a usb key.
the server is running on a Celeron G1620 @ 2.70GHz with 8gb ecc ram. I dont recall the details of the motherboard but its a pretty popular matx server board.
with that aside, I have one major question. will my zfs pool migrate or will I have to backup my data and then load it back in?
I am under the impression that nas4free is easier to work with than freenas. For instance, I tried for probably 2-3 weeks to figure out how to get jails to work so that I could install transmission and remotely control my bittorrent downloads with my phone. it was a frustrating experience that I couldn't quite wrap my head around and I ended up just giving up on it. the unix shell isn't alien to me but im still a total noob using it. I hope nas4free is a little easier and doesn't require fooling around with jails too much.
my priority for this server is keeping my data safe but it would be cool if I could start using the plugins, which is part of the reason I went with opensource instead of purchasing one of the pre-made nas solutions. also I realize that I still need to have a secondary backup solution, I havn't quite figured that out yet. I guess either cloud backup or dvd archival are possibilities. the system does have a dvd burner installed, but I think I like the idea of cloud backup more.
thanks for the help!
