Hi!

I'm a bit puzzled and have a hard time to choose what installation type I have to use.

I will use FreeBSD ports on my NAS4Free.

In the description of the Full install I read:
"Full installs have no benefit over embedded installations!"

In the FAQ about ports I read:
"Yes, it's very easy in Full platform from WebGUI Tab> System|Packages or manually using pkg_add. It can also be done in Embedded platform but it's much more complicated."

That's it. I can't find any more information about this.

I have used the full install before but as I understand things the embedded is the recommended way now. The ports I will use are Pound (reverse proxy), OpenVPN and AACgain.

Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

if you need openvpn you need the full install.

but the question that you should ask yourself: is running this on the nas the right solution?.
in my opinion a nas should only serve files.

however recent version of nas4free have virtualbox by default. you could run those inside virtualbox.

For now, it is the right solution for me to run OpenVPN on my NAS. In a few months, no. I will replace it with a new FW solution that includes OpenVPN.

Since the nature of a NAS being available at all times (always on) it's convenient for me to have OpenVPN on the same machine (among some other useful software running 24/7).

The Virtualbox solution I had not thought about. Thank you, I will investigate that further.

Might be that I just postpone the whole NAS4Free upgrade until I have my new FW in place and then don't need to worry about how to run OpenVPN on NAS4Free.

most anything can be made to work at the expense of simplicity and reliability.
putting all the eggs into one basket is not my preferred path.
for me it has always been easier to fix one thing at a time

add on stuff to a NAS is fine if one understands all the interaction.
for example, in the unmodified state.....
the almost non existent use of the swap partition keeps USB flash fails to a reasonable number
better an SSD or HDD for a boot/swap device in either embedded or full with add on features [IMHO]
