NAS4free/ESXi Build
Model: HP Proliant ML110 G6 – 4 x CPU 2.393Ghz
Processor: Intell Xeon X3430 @2.40GHz
Memory 16Gb
ESXi 5.1.0 Build 799733
NAS4Free: NAS4Free-x64-liveCD-9.1.0.1.636.iso
NAS4Free Installed on Hard Disk (tried both embedded and full)
Virtual Disk for NAS4Free 2GB (thick Provisioned Lazy Zeroed)
Memory for NAS4Free 1GB
Network adapter – VMXNET3 (physical NIC – Broadcom 5782)
VmWare Tools Unable to Install.

I am attempting to build a NAS4Free appliance within ESXi. I want to use VMXNET3 adapters to benefit from the improved performance.

However, I am having inconsistent results when using VMXNET3 adapter. Sometimes the setup allows me to assign an IP address and other times it will not. Sometimes on an initial install it will obtain an IP address via DHCP, other times it will not. On the occasions when it would accept the IP address, it would loose it after a reboot e.g. if we login and change from http to https (this requires a reboot). I cannot access the box after this as the IP address is lost. The network adapter is still assigned, but no IP.

The release note suggest that VMXNET3 adapters are supported in this version of NAS4Free. Some topics appear to suggest that I need to install vmware tools to resolve issues. However, I am not familar with installing vmware tools on NAS4Free and I am having difficulty installing them. For example I have found some references as to how to install them but they suggest installing perl. With teh VMXNET3 setup I could install perl as I had no internet connection, no IP address. I load an e1000 adapter and tried the command ‘pkg_add –r perl’ but got back an error saying it was not available from the repositories. There was alos mention of installing ‘pkg_add –r compat6x-amd64’ but we have an Intel processor, so I wasn’t clear on this either.

For vmware tools help I was following these 2 links

http://ogris.de/vmware/

Has anyone had similar issues with ESXi and VMXNET3 adapters and if so how did you resolve? Is the x64 version correct for Intel?

Please be gentle.... I am a newbie!
