Common USB Flashdisk Size

Hi,

I'm newbie of NAS4Free. I'm interested of embedded installation since it will not consume the HDDs, so I can use all HDDs for data. What is the common size of USB flashdisk used on embedded installation? The NAS4Free embedded image currently is about 95,4MB and the minimum size of USB Flashdisk size on market here is 2GB. Is it useful to have more than 2GB USB Flashdisk on this case (ex. 4GB or more)?

Best regards,

2GB is more than enough even if you want to install the full version (not recommended on an usb flash).

the smallest you can find over 512Mb

most modern MOBOs boot USB just fine

some older Bios only boot from a few USB ports
some older Bios and OS do not like larger USB flash.
to over come this problem some of these large USB flash load drivers for their unique file systems
these larger flash are not compatible or useful for booting unless reformatted to FAT
some also include software for their "cloud club" storage and are win only unless reformatted

despite using modern MOBOs
all 3 of mine boot imbedded but not from the USB. I prefer these small IDE flash drives

also available in PATA

laptop drives from the win 95 era work well for old hardware in stead of booting USB
Just a few Gb and they can be spun down after the embedded OS loads to RAM
a 2.1 Gb salvaged from a Xerographic [parts donor] printer shown here

small volume but full size also work. I once used one of these 1.7 Gb

anything above the embedded OS [a little over 200 Mb] and the config [a little over 20 Kb] is wasted.

Hi, Are you saying that a 512M usb should be enough for embedded installation? how about a 256M IDE SSD, I just have one on hand? If planning to upgrade to new version of nas4free in the future, will those still enough or need more?
Thanks!

Thanks!

try it, as there is nothing to loose in the process.
I would think it is getting close to the lower limit.
I cannot predict the future OS foot print but...
N4F embedded has always been very tightly written, usually about 220 Mb installed.

of course with an SSD there is no spin down needed
