Webgui / ssh hangs when VirtualBox is used

Hi, I'm having a few problems with a new build. The hardware is:
Supermicro X9SCM-F Server Motherboard
Kingston 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 ECC (2)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST3000DM001 3TB 7200 (6)
Intel Pentium G3220
SeaSonic SSR-360GP 360W ATX12V
This is running headless with IPMI.
I am running NAS4Free 9.2.0.1 (revision 943) x64-embedded.
I am new to NAS4Free, but have been running a Solaris x86 machine with ZFS and VirtualBox for the last five years.
The new system seems pretty solid except when I am running VirtualBox (version 4.3.6). The problem is that the Webgui and any ssh shells hang after a while (it varies from a few minutes to an hour or so). In the ssh case the keyboard and screen are being serviced, but shell never responds. The CIFS shares still work that point to the ZFS datasets, but when I set a share to /var/log so I could read system.log etc, that did not work.
I figured out a way to union mount /var/log onto a ufs partition so I could read it after a reboot, and I setup a syslogd daemon on another machine, but neither of these have yielded anything that points to the problem. I can't see anything obvious in the Vbox logs, but I an far from an expert in interpreting these. Apart from installing Virtual box I also installed sudo, but that is all the mods I have made.
So I guess I need some ideas about how I can debug the problem.
Many Thanks
Nik
