Hallo,

I tried NAS4free Live-CD Version 9.2.0.1.972 on my old Siemens-Fujitsu-Computer, but after starting cd loader it automatically reboots always at reaching boot menu with the 6 options.

My Hardware:

DIMM6: 128 MB PC133 SDRAM (3.0-3-3-6 @ 142 MHz) (2.0-2-2-5 @ 100 MHz)

Any ideas, why I cannot completely boot LiveCD on this hardware?

Try if your hardware is supported.
For this, disconnect everything on the IDE ports and just connect one of the CD drives on the first IDE port and boot the 32-bit N$F Live CD

256 mb ram could be to little for the live cd as the nas4free image gets stored in ram.

try installing it onto a hard drive with a full install on another machine then moving the hard drive to that machine.

I tried version 9.2.0.1.972 of Live CD, which automatically reboots every time boot menu is reached. So I tried LiveCD 9.1.0.1.847, with which I can choose a option in boot menu and continue, but after some lines, system becomes freezing after:

real memory = 268427264 (255 MB)
avail memory = 18292736 (17 MB)
kbd1 at kdbmux0
==> Live CD freezes

Too less memory or not?

256 MB is too less for Live-CD; 512MB is good enough (I tried another computer with identical configuration, but more memory). Live-CD 9.1.0.1 - Sandstorm (revision 847) works, I can connect to remote console.

again if you do a full install on a hard drive you safe the ram that is normally used for the livecd image.

Thank you, I first wanted to try the Live CD before doing a full installation.

Tip: Live CD needs 263MiB memory.

I installed full system NAS4Free with 512 MB, running installed NAS4Free works with 256 MB, but for using iSCSI Target I still need 512 MB memory. So I have to buy a memory upgrade to 2x256 MB (which is the maximum the motherboard can manage).

The question is, if you ever will be happy with that old hardware or not better invest in a HP Microserver, which start at 200$/€

You are right, this old hardware is just for learning and nothing for longtime use. Thanks for the tip.

some old MOBO have a 512 Mb RAM limit fixed in the chipset
this will run a N4F, UFS mirror very well
but not ZFS
