Installating FreeNAS 7 from USB KEY

Hi,

I'm using FreeNAS 0.7 (and I don't want to change)

I have an error at booting..

So, I am going to format it and reinject config.xml file to recover the previous configuration. That's a reason why I don't want to upgrade : I'm not an experimented technicien and location of the config.xml is not the same or there are some manipulations to do I can't assume.

I want to install the same version FROM an usb key TO the hard disk (system + swap + DATA ). I already know that is not the best way.

But actually, I don't manage to access the content of the key when booting.

I tried burning FreeNAS-i386-LiveCD-0.7.4919.iso with Unetbootin, Rufus, RMPrepUSB, ActiveBootDiskCreator..

I tried burning FreeNAS-i386-LiveCD-0.7.4919.img with Win32DiskImager, PhysikDiskWrite.. (I changed the extension .iso to .img lol)

But I have a black screen with a _ where I can't type nothing.

Do I have to format the usb key in a special format? Why don't I find a tutorial which explains that step? Do I have to burn IMG file or ISO file ?

It's confused, and what is more I don't understand all forums in english (I am not english at all !)

For USB you need the .img file, which usually also can be extracted from the .iso file

they are not hybrid iso files so you can not use the iso for usb booting.

just burn the iso to a cd and boot from that.

the img file for freenas 0.7.1 are for example here

but most configurations are not that difficult. so it would be quicker to just recreate the config on the new system.

@b0ssman : your link goes to sourceforge and file doesn't exist. And there is no cd-rom drive on the nas, that's why I have to boot on USB


I used 7-zip to extract the FreeNAS-i386-LiveCD-0.7.4919.iso file. It created a folder "FreeNAS-i386-LiveCD-0.7.4919"

In this folder, there are 2 folders :
-[BOOT]
-boot
and 3 files :
-boot.catalog
-FreeNAS-i386-embedded.gz
-mfsroot.gz

Then i extracted -FreeNAS-i386-embedded.gz

It created the folder "FreeNAS-i386-embedded" with the file FreeNAS-i386-embedded.

I used Win32DiskImager to burn this file on my usb key, then i could boot on the NAS!

But, i have not the 9 option to install on the hard disk...

I don't know what to do to get this 9 option ?

that means you have already installed it as the embedded version on the usb stick

take the drive out of your nas. put it into a computer with a cdrom drive. install it there. then move the drive back into the nas.

I build demonstration and give away boxes using most any small hard disk drive
by putting the embedded OS on a Hdd, and then installing the drive set to spin down in 5 minutes,
shortly after the OS is loaded to memory the drive spins down.
lots of win-98 era drives under 10gb in junk boxes
I completely avoid all the USB issues this way

booting from a liveUSB ( if not possible on your NAS on other machine)

PD: Armandh suggest to use old IDE Disk (from laptops) that have all benefits of a Hard Disk and do not cost ( you probably have one old laptop or know someone that have one) and are ideal to install nas4free/FreeNAS on it (full or embeded)

As b0ssman says upgrade to latest N4F it's recomended and can't be difficult, in Forums there are a lot of post about sucessfull migrations: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6751

I have often had a CD/DVD drive hanging out of the side during an instillation of the OS to a bootable medium.
None of my active N4F storage boxes use USB for anything.
USB is great when it works; but with older hardware,
I always had more issues with USB than successes
