Adding drivers for external network card

Hello!
I'm having trouble getting a network card to work. It is an "JUE130" from J5 Create, and it presents itself as "AX88179" in windows.
If I understand correctly, I need to enable (?) the axe driver (
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=axe(4)), and in order to do that I need to add a line to loader.conf. When I try to do that I get an error, "read only filesystem". I've tried searching for a command to make the file readble, but nothing works.
Am I on the right track, and how do I make the file readable?

I thought I couldn't make links, so I just put it withing parantheses, and that fooled the auto-linkmaker. Here is the correct link:
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?quer ... ormat=html

Hmm, no idea why the link didn't work (doesnt for me either). To get what I intended, search for "axe". Not that the link is very important - it is just detaling the driver I think I should use.
The main question is: how do I edit loader.conf?

You can add entries in the loader conf via webgui
Just saw this is an USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter. I would guess this doesn't really work as USB 3.0 support is according to my knowledge in FreeBSD 9.2 not really stable. To avoid further annoying trials, invest in an Intel NIC, this is a recommended solution

The problem is that I cant access the webgui, since I lack a ethernet adapter. The one on the motherboard failed earlier today (doesnt get listed in the setup dialogs) so I bought an external adapter.
That it is external is because I don't have any more expansion slots. Are there any recommened Intel external adaptors?

Try this one :

http://ark.intel.com/products/family/46829
Don't think its worth to give more effort on this USB - ethernet adapter. Try to return it and think about which Add-on Card you can take out of the system. Check always for FreeBSD compatibility if u try some more exotic hardware.... quite often there is only FreeBSD support from the major big players...

Can you describe your hardware further? If you don't have expansion room for a nic this doesn't sound like a good starting point for a nas.

Its not really a starting point, its me trying to recover a NAS for some reason suddenly couldn't find its network interface anymore, right after I updated to the latest version (when I make an update I always install on a fresh usb stick so that I can revert, and the old installs now has the same issue, so I guess its hardware related)
I've given up on the current board, and have ordered a new one (MSI C847MS-E33). More expansion slots, more SATA ports)

hardware fails, thankfully N4F is easily transported to other hardware.
my two atom powered boxes are examples of "at the limit" hardware
the 2 thread Atom-Ion has no expansion slots [on-board IO devices only]
the 4 thread Atom had only one PCI slot which is used for a Gb Nic upgrade.
both have all the Hdd connections occupied.
sure everyone likes to use the old XYZ whatever rather than trashing it
but when something breaks, I am too old to spend any of my time remaining
fitting square pegs to round holes [or the digital equivalent]
good choice on getting new hardware.
