I am planning to upgrade the MB and CPU. Is fresh installation necessary? Thanks!

usually not, but you need to import the disks again at Disks | Management maybe you need to press "Clear config and import disks"
You can also export your config and import it on a fresh install with the new mainboard.

unlike MS windows, Linux and BSD rebuild the hardware configuration at each boot
this allows one to move a boot drive from hardware to similar hardware without a problem
a neat feature on a FREE OS, certainly undesirable if you SELL and license the install only to the original OEM hardware
My son's P4 N4F had swollen and leaking caps and I replaced it with a embedded celeron board
worked OOTB needing only the new Nic and IP address to be established

Thank you, guys. I will try to boot without re-installation after upgrade first.

try and again see if it happens; you can see
here and follow the direction, too many unknowns at this point, maybe you need to press "Clear config and import disks"

Hi new to the forum and I may be facing a similar situation. Just going to be upgrading the MB do I still also need to clear config and import disks?
