[SOLVED]When booting config.xml not found

Post by jgkolt »

when starting up nas4free about 50% of the time i get a no config.xml file and the boot stops saying the operating system has halted. please press any key to reboot. when i dont get that error it boots fine. this is a headless unit so i dont always have access to the console.

created usb boot disk from latest 9.2 iso.I have tried to put the thumb drive in different slots and didn't help.

Version 9.2.0.1 - Shigawire (revision 972)
Build date Mon Apr 28 02:43:01 CEST 2014
Platform OS FreeBSD 9.2-RELEASE-p4 (kern.osreldate: 902001)
Platform x64-embedded on Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1220 v3 @ 3.10GHz
System Supermicro X10SAE
System bios American Megatrends Inc. version: 2.00 04/21/2014
16 gb of memory
4 4TB hitachi hard drives

is this enough information? I am researching how to save a log file from startup if that may help. looking at /var/log/system/log doesnt show any errors but i can only view them after a correct bootup. The screen goes too fast to be able to see if there are error messages.

To try to troubleshoot i turned off sound, turned os serial ports, no usb to disable, different thumb drives.

I was looking for that in the bios but couldn't find it. googling and searching bios again for usb3 settings.

UPDATE:
Update to disable on the supermicro board
disable the XHCI hand-off and XHCI mode under ADVANCED -> Chipset->PCH-IO CONFIG in the BIOS
which is from
https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?th ... post-77244

Retesting

After multiple reboots it seems to be working fine. I will keep testing it over the next couple of days to verify it is truly fixed. Is this "bug" fixed in newer versions of Nas4Free/FreeBSD? It looks like usb3 support was disabled in freenas ( https://bugs.freenas.org/issues/3273 ) should i put in ticket for it to be updated the same for Nas4Free?

Thank you @b0ssman very much!!!!!!!!! now i can go to sleep.

as I understand it the trouble with USB-3 is a BSD not N4F issue

yes it may be a freebsd bug but with nas4free distributing the os with the software it may be beneficial to do something about it if it is not fixed in future builds so others don't run into the same issue. which is why referenced the freenas project and what they did as an example. i have been using freenas for a while and just recently started using nas4free.
