I could not get the LiveUSB or LiveCD to install a non embedded version of the OS on a USB or SSD until I disconnected all of the drives that I had planned on using for the RAID. After that the installation worked without any issues.

My System
Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3, AMD FX 6-Core, 16GB ram. 256GB SSD for OS.
I realize that the processor is overkill but paid only $65 dollars for MB and processor so could not pass them up.
AS a side note using a SSD for the OS/data/swap files results in very satisfying boot times and a very fast system.

USB is a chronic problem [IMHO]
except one, none of the N4F that I have built use USB to boot.
I use SATA or PATA IDE lines and industrial flash or old/small Hdd.
[an embedded boot Hdd can be installed and set to spin down after 5 minutes]
only one where it worked without any problem did I leave a USB boot.
PATA/SATA boot may cause use of an expansion card for data drives drives.
I've almost always found that route easier,

back in the days when N4F was known as FreeNAS-7
live CD and a 3" floppy for the config was the [non USB] go to method
[hardware most old computers had already]
Live CD and USB flash for the config is a good choice still, if working parts are in the spare junk bin.
I once used an 8 Mb camera flash and usb adapter for the config which is under 20 Kb.
