Hi all,

So I am trying to install nas4free and it seems it's only recognizing the installation usb cdrom drive and my first hard drive only (cda0, and da0 respectively).

I cannot install to the other USB stick I have plugged in. Every time i go through the prompts, theres a screen where all this information goes across the screen, it says "device not configured" and then takes me to the screen where I have to select the installation drive, and my only options are my primary hard drive, and cd rom drive. It wont even recognize the second hard drive I installed nor the other USB where I want to install this. When I hit enter, it just takes me back to the first menu.
This is a brand new USB so I dont think that is the problem. Any suggestions?

What size of your new USB ?
MB ?

both are 16 gb

you forgot to tell us which hardware you have.
in case of usb 3.0. try turning that off.

I also like to install the OS (NAS4Free, OpenELEC, ETC) with only the USB stick attached and no other drives. I have found this works best for two reasons:
1) you know that the drive you will be installing on is the correct one, absolutely.
2) Sometimes once a HDD is detected by the BIOS, it no longer looks for other bootable drives, so without those HDDs attached, I have found that USB sticks are detected easier when trying to install an OS such as N4F.

Check BIOS UEFI setting. Try to replace it and do install.
In all cases, you need bot server from liveCD|USB, then attach second flash.
Wait, when bios and OS recognize it - it will write to console message about attached USB, then try to install

i have no idea what replacing the bios uefi setting means. sorry guys, im not a technical expert here. its just a side project that i wanted to do on the side that seems to be going south.

after i plug the usb in, there's a screen that pops up briefly recognizing that a usb has been inserted, however it says it is not configured or something, and then i go through the prompts and it just never installs the darned thing.

ok plain English "USB sucks" [IMHO]
usb boot is great when it works
a great pain in the posterior when it does not.
to work for USB booting the best choice is a USB flash 2Gb or less formatted in FAT
[larger they often need a running OS to make use of integrated drivers and the non fat file system]
one is far better off with an old small Hdd to keep the embedded OS.
It can later be set to sipn down after the OS is loaded to ram.

Print to forum about your motherboard something. Link for manual is preferable.

armandh, may be user's motherboard have only 1 or 2 sata ports and not have IDE . Example -Intel Atom motherboards

I have had zero issue using a USB boot device with NAS4Free. It's a 2 or 4 GB Verbatim USB stick.

My issues have stemmed from a bad HDD used for testing. The HDD was not used a boot device.

yes but a cheap SATA or PATA expansion card will fix that without all the hair pulling

most QUALITY mobo with a well done bios will have no problem with USB boot
but they are usually found serving greater needs.

the hardest I find are old OEM boards where they started writing there own bios to save a $1.00
with the usual two PATA IDE one can get a boot drive and 3 data drives

I will give USB the usual shot
and if it cannot quickly be made to work with a known good USB boot stick
I will shortly abandon that in favor of other boot sources
