I built a NAS from an HP DL160 G6 chassis with an LSI 9207-4i4e HBA controller card, so that I could manage the 4 internal drives plus use one or more direct access storage expansion bays, as needed. I added initially, a single MSA60 DAS, with 12 drives in it.
When I did the installation to a 4 Gb flash drive, that went as expected, but when I populated all 16 drive bays (the internal 4 & the external 12), I could only see 14 of them in the disk management screen, and I'm trying to sort out if that is a limitation of the platform, of if I have a few bad ports somewhere... I've tried rebooting, and I also disconnected the MSA60, since one of the obviously missing drives was one of the SSDs in an internal slot.
After MSA60 was disconnected, clearing the configuration and rescanning first just showed only 3 of the 4 drives, so I thought maybe I had a bad drive, or a bad port on the internal backplane, so I swapped one of the SSDs with one of the platter drives, and cleared/rescanned again. Now all 4 of the drives are showing up in the internal bays, so I'm wondering if what I'm after is because of FreeBSD being limited to only 16 devices total?
Does anyone else have more than 16 devices in their disk configuration?
The intended system configuration is:
HP DL160 G6 with 2x Xeon L5520 QC, 72 Gb RAM & LSI 9207-4i4e
HP MSA60 Direct Access Storage bay with SAS2 connection to external port above
2x 32 Gb SSD (intended to end up as a mirrored pair for the ZIL & L2ARC)
14x Toshiba 5 Gb SATA 3.5" drives
2nd MSA60 daisy-chained to first (currently not installed yet)

Re: What is the maximum number of drives or devices?
Update: I've gone and reseated all of the drives several times, and now they all seem to appear in the disk configuration properly and without delay in the disk management screen, so I am guessing that I got some spider web or similar debris that was scraped off (the chassis have both been sitting around for a while, unused).
